| External Wushu Class
The classes we offer in our external Wushu program combine different aspects of training in order to create a well-rounded martial artist. Students begin by learning basic punches, stances, and kicks, which are practiced over and over, even as the student becomes more advanced. Basics are always emphasized, as they must be strong and solid so the student may move onto learning the forms. First, we begin with strengthening and conditioning during the warm-up segment of the class. Next we do line drills that have been used in China for thousands of years. On Mondays we move into self-defense and kicking. On Wednesdays we go into Wushu forms. At each of the program levels, students will learn several hand forms as well as weapons training in Traditional Wushu. In our school we do not go by belts or sashes. Each student starts and ends with a black sash. The sole purpose of a belt or sash is to keep your vital organs in places. Most schools use belts or sashes to provide students with a clear progression of skills. A lot of schools use this as a way to make more money. Having no belt system also removes the ego in students. |
| Internal Wushu Class
In our internal class we focus on health and well being. Internal styles focus on meditation and the use of "Chi", or "vital energy". The Ch'i is developed through practicing specific postures and sounds, mental imaging and breathing techniques. This "internal" training is generally referred to in Chinese as Chi Kung (Pinyin: Qigong) or Nei Kung (Pinyin: Neigong), meaning "Chi work" and "Internal work," respectively. T'ai Chi Ch'uan: (Translation: Supreme Ultimate Boxing) Sometimes called "meditation in motion," T'ai Chi Ch'uan (or simply T'ai Chi) is characterized by slow, rhythmic, relaxed movements and is widely known for its health benefits. In fact, it has become increasingly popular over the past 30 years in the West merely as a form of exercise therapy to reduce stress, lose weight, lower blood pressure, and promote general health and well being. However, taught in its entirety, T'ai Chi Ch'uan is a very powerful and effective martial art. T'ai Chi masters of old possessed extraordinary strength and fighting skills, and many made their living as professional bodyguards. T'ai Chi Ch'uan is the physical manifestation of the "Yin and Yang" cosmology, commonly illustrated as the intertwined dark and light halves of a circle. In Chinese, this combination of the Yin and the Yang is called the T'ai Chi ("Grand Terminus," or "Supreme Ultimate"). The power of the internal force is virtually unlimited and can be developed into much higher levels than external brute force. |

| One of the main reasons to salute is to give honor to the past masters who have gone before you. You give them respect for the hardships they endured and their time and dedication they have given in order to gain their skill and knowledge. Saluting to your seniors also shows humility. Being humble is an essential part of Wushu training. It is part of your moral character training, in which your Sifu will observe to see if you are worthy of learning the more advanced material. If one has a negative attitude, they are not ready to learn more because they have not learned all aspects, whether it is moral or physical, of Wushu. Positive attitudes are required at all times for everyones benefit. |
