I. Introduction
======================
In order to keep from overwhelming you, I've split my FAQ up into 4 lessons.  I'll first discuss the basics, my main strategies for winning, and then character specific strategies that involve using my main strategies.

The goals of lesson 1 are:

* Become familiar with each characterfs counter gems
* Become familiar with 2 ways to build a gkillh block

===============================
II. The keys to winning
===============================
The keys to winning at Puzzle Fighter are:

* knowing what your opponentfs counter gem pattern is.  A counter gem pattern is the pattern in which a character drops blocks on his/her opponent.
* building your gems so that they counter your opponentfs counter pattern
keep the gdroph column as free as possible.  The gdroph column is the column
where the next you get falls.  If the middle column is all the way to the top, you
die regardless of how much space is free in the other columns.

====================
III. Characters
====================

Here is how each character drop counter gems.  I will refer to this pattern as "coutner gem pattern."

Ryu:
R G B Y R G
R G B Y R G
R G B Y R G
R G B Y R G
Ken:
Y Y Y Y Y Y
B B B B B B
G G G G G G
R R R R R R
Chun-li:
Y Y R R G G
Y Y R R G G
R R G G B B
R R G G B B
Sakura:
G B B B B Y
G R R R R Y
G B B B B Y
G R R R R Y
Morrigan:
Y B G G B Y
Y B G G B Y
B Y R R Y B
B Y R R Y B
Felicia:
G B B R R Y
G B B R R Y
G R R B B Y
G R R B B Y
Lei lei:
R R G G Y B
B R R G G Y
B B R R G G
Y B B R R G
Donavan:
B B B G G G
B B B G G G
R Y R Y R Y
R Y R Y R Y
Akuma:
R Y B G R Y
Y B G R Y B
B G R Y B G
G R Y B G R
Dan:
R R R R R R
R R R R R R
R R R R R R
R R R R R R
Devilot:
G B Y R G B
B Y R G B Y
Y R G B Y R
R G B Y R G

Dan and Chun are the easiest to counter, so donft pick them unless you want to give your opponent an advantage.  Akuma & Devilot have the most difficult pattern to counter.

So in order to counter Dan, you should build red.  If you want to counter Chun, build red on the left side, and blue on the right side.  And so on.
For now, just remember what the left side of each character pattern is and build to supplement that (i.e. if they drop blue on the left side, build blue, if they drop green, build green, etc.).  Ifll discuss more specific strategies in a future lesson.

=======================
IV. Strategy #1
=======================

 The best way to build a block of one color is to build it on the left side because there is more gfreeh space to work with because it is the farthest from the gdroph column.
 Here is one strategy for building a single color.  Here are some pics to illustrate how it goes (supposing I want to build red):

R
R

-->

-->

R
R

G
R

-->
R
R

R R G

R R G

And so on.

--------------------
Junk colors
--------------------
Any pair that doesnft have red (or whatever color I want to build), I drop it on the extreme right.

----------------------------------
Donft drop in the middle
----------------------------------
With this strategy, there is no need to drop block in the middle column (4th from the right), so try to avoid doing it whenever possible (unless it will blow up a lot).

--------------------
Advantages:
--------------------
With this strategy, one color can be built sky-high to the point that it can kill an opponent and yet not block the middle.

--------------------------
Disadvantages:
--------------------------
* If you donft get the color youfre looking for, youfll have a hard time building a huge block.
* If you get more mixed pairs (i.e. gRGh in my sample) than gpureh pairs (i.e. RR in my sample), you will have this:

  R B
  R Y
  R G
  R B
R R B
R R G

In this situation, even if I got a gpureh pair, it will be hard to get it to the extreme left.

* Another problem is that this strategy can block off your best block:

R R G
R R B
R R Y
R R G
R R B
R R B
R R G

If I blow up my huge red block, I can surely kill my opponent, but I can't blow it up cuz all the junk I dropped to the right of it blocks it off.  The way to prevent this from occuring is blowing up the junk whenever I can, but that is not always possible.

-------------------
Conclusion:
-------------------
Although this strategy has some faults, itfs good for beginners to get into the habit of building a huge block.

=====================
V. Strategy #2
=====================

Here is a strategy that solves the problems of strategy #1.  Note how the junk is thrown down the extreme left instead of in the 3rd column from the right (I'm building green):

G
R
-->

-->

R G

G
G
-->

R G

-->
    G
R G G
  G G
  G G
R G G
B G G
Y G G
R G G

This way, my block is open to be blown up cuz the junk (i.e. unwanted colors) is not in the way.

---------------------
Advantages:
---------------------
My big block is relatively easy to blow up.

------------------------
Disadvantages:
------------------------
The junk on the extreme left is difficult to blow up, but this is a minor drawback compared to the easy access I have to the big block.

-------------------
Conclusion:
-------------------
Because of itfs advantages, I prefer to use strategy #2 over #1.  But strategy #1 is still good, so if you canft pick up #2 that easily, I suggest you try to master strategy #1 first then try out #2.

====================
VI. Conclusion
====================
 From this lesson, you should have learned that:

* the most effective way to defeat your opponent is by dropping a huge block
* 2 ways to build a huge block
* build your main block based on what your opponentfs counter gem pattern is

If this isnft what you learned, ask me what you donft understand =)

===================
Next lessonc
===================
* how to build on the rightmost side
* how to use the crash gem and diamond most effectively
* chaining attacks
