| So where are your rats going to live? First it depends on exactly how many rats you intend to keep. You should have at least two as rats are sociable animals and need company. The best way to think is the bigger the cage you can afford, the better. As rats are becoming more popular as pets you can actually find rat cages in pet stores. No matter what cage you buy, you should always purchase some additional toys to keep your rats entertained. |
| You might be able to consider certain ferret or even chinchilla cages. One important thing to remember is don't buy a cage that has wire floors. This is uncomfortable to your rat's feet. If you do have one, try to cover the wire. I put old towels in to cover the wire on one of the shelves and the rats also use it as a bed. Another suggestion for cages is what I have done. Depending on the dimensions of cages, it might be possible to postion them on top of one another to give you a multi-level cage. Or you could use tubes to connect cages sideways. Just make sure you check them for holes - you don't want your rats escaping. |

| Need some ideas for what you could use as a rat house? If you look closely in the above pic you can see the yellow igloo which is suppose to be for guinea pigs. This is suitable for a number of rats as it is quite spacious. Another favourie is finch nests. They are quite small though so if your rat is on the chunky side (like Monkey) they might not fit! The bad thing is they don't last very long. I went to bed and there was part of a finch nest, I woke up and it was nothing but tiny pieces!! They didn't destroy it completely in one night though. The nest was gradually getting smaller day by day :) . Rat hammocks are another fantastic invention. More and more people are making them so it is possible for you to buy them online and they aren't too expensive. Check out my links page to find out where I got mine. Your rats will probably prefere to sleep off the ground so a hammock will be very welcome. Mine love theirs and I get great amusement in watching them trying to fit on at once. You wouldn't believe the positions rats will sleep in... |
