UKRAINIAN
CATHOLIC WOMEN'S LEAGUE (history)
The
U.C.W.L.C. of Nanaimo Branch was formed in July 18th 1982. First meeting was
held at the residence of Father Deacon Paul and Zena Stephaniuk on the Norwell Avenue in
Nanaimo.
The
Eparchial Executive was represented by Sister Jerome Chimy S.S.I.M. - spiritual
advisor.
The
eparchial organizational referenka represented by Eparchial President Yaroslava
Tatarniuk and Tin Zarski from Vancouver B.C.
Our first executive was as follows:

TANIA WAGNOR
SECRETARY
ROSE WIZINSKI
TREASURER
STEPHIE COGGINS
SPIRITUAL
ADVISOR
DEACON PAUL STEPHANIUK
Bishop
Jerome Chimy celebrated Divine Liturgy to mark this event. Mass was held at the Roman
Catholic Church on 104th St. which was temporarily used for Sunday Services.
A
Luncheon was prepared by the U.C.W.L.C. ladies, and as there were no facilities
of our own, preparation took place at the Deacon and Zena's home on Norwell
Avenue.
In
October 1982 three of our members attended the 3rd Eparchial Convention and
later attended the first Spiritual Retreat at Lac La Juene. Purchase of St.
Michael's church and hall at 4017 Victoria Ave. Nanaimo was completed in
September 1983 and the first service was held on February 1984.
The
main fundraising was done by the U.C.W.L.C. members by making perogys at Deacon
Paul and Zena’s residence. Also they were storing and selling perogys from
their residence. The income
for the
U.C.W.L.C.
held their first Perogy Supper in Feb 1986 with
co-operation from members and a dedicated executive. Our organization had reason
for existing because it teaches us to develop in our spiritual life. We learn to accept
stress,
challenges,
and difficulties and to work together. With respect for each other and harmony,
we support our Parish
