The horns and antlers are very fragile! Please handle them gently and treat them with respect.
What are horns and antlers used for? What kinds of animals have horns and antlers?
What are horns and antlers made of?
Horns = Keratin, the same substance as hair, nails, and claws;
Antlers = Bone
Who has them?
Horns = both males and females have horns;
Antlers = usually only the male has antlers. Some species the female does, too.
How long does the animal keep them?
Horns = stay on for animal's lifetime;
Antlers = shed and regrown every year
What are the advantages and disadvantages of shedding antlers every year? (conserve energy during winter, but use energy to regrow. No protection without antlers).
How can you tell (by looking) the difference between antlers and horns? (horns have a single spike, antlers branch into multiple points).
What does the number of points on a set of antlers mean? (the success of the animal that year, not age. When competing for a mate, a healthy animal that could devote more of its energy to growing antlers will be more likely to win the battle, and the healthy animal will have healthy offspring).
