The next step is the creation of man and woman.  The three gods come across two fallen trees, an ash and an elm.  Odin creates man and woman out of the two trees.  This symbolizes another balance that needs to be made within the ego, the balance between the feminine and masculine.  This takes place in the psyche as the recognition of the anima or feminine aspect in the male psyche and the animus, the masculine aspect in the female psyche (Jung).  Both man and woman must take this step in order to create internal balance.
The placement of man and woman into Midgard by the three heros represents the protection that the self (Midgard) gives the ego (man and woman) from the dangers of life.
The next event is the creation of night and day.  These symbolize the light and dark phases or emotions of the ego.  At this point the ego is controlled by its emotions. The Sun and Moon also represent uncontrolled emotions until the archetype of the twins emerges (Jung).  The archetype of the twins is symbolized by a boy named Moon and a girl named Sun.  However the symbols for this archetype are  atypical because in most cultures the moon symbolizes femininity and the sun symbolizes masculinity.    Sun and Moon are described as having radiant beauty because they symbolize the final stage in development of the ego.  Odin captures the two siblings and places them in the sky in order to control the celestial bodies they had been named after.  This symbolizes the final balancing act of the ego, the balancing or control of the emotions.
The seperation and development of the ego is complete after this final stage.  The ego has seperated by killing Ymir.  It has developed by creating balance within the psyche.
