"I opted to walk down the stairwell instead of taking the elevator. I thought about the long day I had gone through, as I began my five floor decent. I forgot about the conflict and madness of work. I could only think of all the people I had come into contact with the entire day.
Even those that regularly give me grief, at some point during the day made me smile for one reason or another. Thoughts of the friends and family I had shared time with made me feel loved and warm inside. I stopped my decent as I heard the heavy fire door close behind me. I took a moment to thank God for all that he has given me. I looked down on the step below, and found a shiny new penny stamped "2000" and face up. 'What luck!'
I am not always superstitious, nor do I promote the Lord as often as I should. However, I never felt as close to God as I did in that empty stairwell after our brief exchange of gratitude and gifts." jhn ~ 12-10-2000 |
