Ride the Lightning is considered by some to be Metallica's breakthrough album. This was also released on Megaforce records. "Fade to Black" was a big hit but Metallica got blame for it, because it was said that teens committed suicide because of it.

This also started Metallica's first stdium tour (with Ozzy Osbourne). This was Cliff Burton's last album before he died on tour in a fatal bus crash. Check out the Cliff tribute page to learn more.

The $5.98 EP Garage Days Re-Revisited was a 5-track EP of cover songs that Metallica did after Jason joined the band. They made it so Jason could get introduced to the fans and so he could get a feel of what it was like playing with the band. It is now out of print and is a collector's item.

...And Justice For All marked the point where Metallica began to see radio time and MTV airplay. "One" was Metallica's first Music video, and singles such as "One", "Eye of the Beholder" and "Harvestor of Sorrow" were released. This was Jason Newsted's (Cliff's replacement) first full length album with the band. AJFA has sold over 9 million copies in the US to date.

Metallica, or "The Black Album" as it is commonly called, is Metallica's best selling album to date. It has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and is still on Billboard's Top 200 Albums. It is different that all the others because the tracks are shorter and more "radio-friendly". The making of The Black Album was very stressful. It took almost a year and Jason, Lars and Kirk all got divorced during this period. For more on the making of the Black album, check out "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica, Part 1" in the videography section. Also check out the "Classic Albums: Metallica" video that is coming out this year (2001).

Load was a turning point for Metallica. The music was different. Kirk and Jason played bigger roles in the writing and music on Load. It is Metallica's longes album ever, with a time of 78:59. Some people say that Metallica "sold out", because this was a different album, but TRUE fans know that's bullshit.

S&M
Produced by Hetfield & Ulrich with Bob Rock
Released: 1999
Singles: Nothing Else Matters, No Leaf Clover
Videos: No Leaf Clover
This is probably one of the most surprising things for a metal band to do. In 1999, Metallica set a date to play with the San Francisco Orchestra. They did many of their songs and they were played along with the orchestra. Two new songs, No Leaf Clover and -Human were written for S&M. The song, "The Ecstacy of Gold" is originally by Emilio Morricone, and can be found on The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly soundrack and "Live Shit: Binge & Purge".
