RACE - Reusable Architecture
Components for the Enterprise
RACE was a primarily a
Proof of Concept for a major client whose primary business need was to integrate multiple
Point of Sale (POS) terminals with a central database across a WAN.
Vitria BW 3.0 was used to facialitate communication across the WAN and the front end was
Microsoft COM/DCOM. The challenge was to securely transmit the information from the POS
terminal using XML to and EJB architecture.
The information from the POS would be picked up as events in Vitria using the
publish/subscribe technology and Vitria would trigger session beans which in turn would
communicate to entity beans to update/retrieve information - typically details of
transaction and updates stock values in the central database .
Java Transaction API's were used to ensure that unsuccessful transactions were rolled back
to prevent common database errors.
The volume of transactions was in the order of about 100,000 per hour which neccessiated
high fault tolerance and load balancing capabilities.
