Now before I rattle on about BHP, oversteer and V6s. I have to tell you how an engine works so that you may truly understand BHP and torque.

Almost all cars have a four-stroke combustion cycle:

1) Intake stroke
2) Compression stroke
3) Combustion stroke
4) Exhaust Stroke
First we must introduce ourselves to the various parts of the engine before we can understand how the four-stroke cycle works.

Cylinder - This is the core of the engine, it is within this cylinder the piston move up and down to produce the turning motion. Below is a picture of first an Inline arrangement of four cylinders Second is a picture of a V6 engine. (3 cylinders either side). Then thirdly a Flat arrnagement. Aka. Boxer or Horizontally opposed.
