Bonsai: a reflection of nature, captured in miniature, as seen through the eyes and soul of the practitioner

When I first started out attempting to grow bonsai I had no idea what I was getting into. I just jumped right in and started putting trees into pots. It is only now that I realize what a mistake that was. I have read numerous books and scoured the internet for information regarding bonsai. If I had read just half as much as I have now when I first started I would be so far ahead of where I am now. But that is water under the bridge. I would recommend to everyone reading this that you read as much possible. It will save you many heartaches and costly mistakes. Below is my current library of bonsai literature. I would recommend any of them to you. They all have something to offer and I have learned from each and every one of them.

This was my first bonsai book. It was laying around my parents house for years. I don't ever remember reading it as a kid but I may have, and it may have been what sparked the desire to learn bonsai. It is very old, older than me in fact. I still have it as part of my collection.

This was the next book I picked up on bonsai. I bought it at an Orchard Supply and Hardware store after attempting my first bonsai. I used it more for reference as to styles than actually paying much attention to the information contained therein. That was a mistake that would cost me many trees.

This was the next book I bought. I finally bought a book with the intention of learning everything I could about taking care of bonsai. It has been well read and I have learned so much from Harry. I owe him a debt of gratitude for printing this for all us novices.

These next two books I bought at the same time. I was now so interested in learning all I could that I just bought every bonsai book at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore at my local mall.

I had begun to learn a bit and kept hearing the name John Naka when it came to bonsai masters. I decided to buy these two books by him to see what the fuss was all about. They have to be the most in depth text I have ever come across concerning bonsai. The pictures may not be as glossy and colorful as alot of other books, but if you really want to learn how to grow and take care of bonsai they are a must for your collection.

I really like this book. Colin goes over how he came to create some of his trees. He tells about the mistakes he made and gives some very good information regarding the care of each species of tree. It made me feel good to know that I am not the only one who makes mistakes.

It is because of the first book I bought by Colin that I went out in search of other material by him. This is the other book I found. It is a basic book, but it covers the basic care of bonsai in a way that is concise yet full of information I had not learned on my own. Great book!

This is another fantastic book. I picked it up the same time I bought Bonsai Care Manual. This book has great information about bonsai care and also step by step photos of styling techniques. I have read through it three times now and learn something new each time I pick it up.
