1987 is when it all started. The Legend of Zelda was released and
was an amazing game for its time. It featured a revolutionary birds eye
view and a "free moving" Link. It was also the first RPG and let you store
up to three quests at a time. This was the beginning of the long
relationship gamers still have today with Link and the Tri-force.
Then in the
following year, Nintendo turned another hit with "Zelda 2: The Adventure
of Link". This was also a huge success which had Link visiting six
palaces, attempting to wake Zelda.
Now Link made
his debut on the SNES, with "A Link to the Past". This game was different
from the previous two games. Now, Link had to rescue Zelda from the
evil Ganondorf who has retreated into the world of darkness.
In his fourth
game, "Link's Awakening" on Game Boy, Link is shipwrecked on an island
and must awake the Wind Fish. *snore* But never the less, this was
a great game and even to this date is selling copies like mad around the
world.
Then in 1998,
Zelda made her debut on 64 with the absolute greatest game ever created,
"Orcania of Time". It featured some of the best story lines and graphics
the 64 has ever seen. In this game Link had to go around Hyrule saving
Hyrule from the evil grip of Ganondorf. It had a fully interactive environment
with mini games and side quests. This cart earned game of the year in 98'.
In 2000, the
long awaited sequel to the Orcania of Time, "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's
Mask" was released. This was also a great game, but was not as "ground
breaking" as its predecessor. The story line took place a couple of months
after Orcania of Time with Link being robbed of his beloved horse Epona.
This game, while borrowing the same game engine as Ocarina of Time, was
able to provide more minigames. It had an arsenal of masks to chose
from, but since it was not as original as Orcania of Time, it did not do
quite as well.
Link has entertained
on four systems and has been one of the most successful game series ever.
It has captivated the minds of many people controlling Link and fighting
evil to save the princess Zelda, and now in the wake of a new system, it
has no signs of stopping. Long live Zelda!
