Sometimes you just have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down. -- Kobi Yamada - Author

Newsletter or e-zine is a vital tool to keep in touch with your visitors. High-quality e-zine will bind your visitors to your online business. Through e-zine subscription, you'll retain your visitors. Likewise, your visitors will 'remember' you or most importantly your site and your business. It's a way to let your visitors know you are 'still' there for them and what your business has to offer to them. E-zine is an important way to build a long-term, successful online business. If you don't publish an e-zine...start one!

1. What's the advantage of having an e-zine?

As mentioned earlier, it will...

1. keep your visitors
2. establish and demonstrate credibility, build trust
3. promote your products
4. foster a sense of community
5. let your visitors know you are really there behind your business and your business is still active

If your subscribers like what you have to say in your e-zine, when it's time to make a decision, they'll likely choose you...the one that consistently offering high-value information that reflects their needs and desires.

2. What should I write about in my e-zine?

Plenty. Discuss...

1. new developments of your business...new/enhanced products, additional services, new e-book, affiliate program reviews, etc
2. what's happening on the net
3. tips of various kinds
4. good books/articles reviews
5. anything that's relevant and of interest to your subscribers

3. What format should I use? HTML? Text?
First of all, design your e-zine for easy reading by your subscribers and for easy development by you. You may want to develop a text-format e-zine to cater for those who can't read html document on their email software. However, it does not have to be 'text-only'. You may include relevant images to your e-zine. Since most email software now reads html, you can design your e-zine in html format which looks exactly like a web page. It's easier to read and more appealing to the eyes.

4. How often should I publish my e-zine?

Schedule it at your own pace. Quarterly seems too long and your subscribers may just forget when and where they subscribed the e-zine. If weekly is too rush for you, schedule it for monthly. If everything is in place and you feel it's time to contact your subscribers more often, you can then gradually reschedule it to bi-monthly or weekly. No matter what frequency you choose to deliver your e-zine, deliver it via email on time. Regular, timely delivery establish credibility.

5. How do I promote my e-zine?

Set up a web page to announce your subscription. Provide a link to your subscription web page on every relevant page of your web site. Create and use an eye-catching 'sig file' in your daily email exchange with friends, colleagues, and relatives. Direct them to your subscription web page.

6. How much information should I gather for the subscription?

You only need just one thing...email address. That's all about it. You may ask for the first name to give it a personal touch when you send your email with the first name. Really, that's all about it. Asking all kinds of information will only turn your visitors away. All they want is just to have the e-zine to be delivered to their mail box. They are not at your site to apply for a credit card!

7. Somehow I can sense that my subscribers are getting bored. How can I keep my e-zine lively and interesting?

It's important to write several articles, from different angles. Focus upon a new benefit each time. Have your main articles as the main course and put some other light readings (like tips, jokes, quotes, etc) as side dishes. You'll bound to have something new to tell your subscribers. Provide what your subscribers want to hear, not what you want to talk about. Make him look forward to receiving the next issue!

8. Will the delivery of my e-zine be considered as spam?

It depends on who you delivery your e-zine to. NO - if you send your e-zine to those who subscribed it through your website. YES - if you simply send it to anyone else who never subscribe to your e-zine. Remember to include unsubscribe mechanism in your e-zine. Once a subscriber unsubscribe, respect his decision and stop sending him immediately. Learn how to "spamcheck" your e-zine.

9. Some of the e-zines I subscribed delivered straight to the junk mail folder without me knowing it, or worse, never even reach my mail box. How can I assure that my e-zine will not end up in the same fate

Some email servers filter emails that looked suspicious (spam) based on certain criteria...bulk emails, emails contain keywords like MLM, gambling, make money, lots of CAPS and exclamation marks, etc. Tell your visitors and subscribers to exclude your email address from the 'Block List' list. Instead, ask them to enter your email address in the 'Allow List' list. Check out Deliver-My-Mail.

10. Some of the email addresses bounce back. What should I do?

There are a few possibilities why the email addresses bounce back...

1. invalid email address due to typo error
2. invalid email account (email account has been deleted/ changed)
3. full mail box (mail box exceeds the allocated size)

Gather the bounce-backs into a database. If you get bounce-backs from the same address again from your next delivery, your are almost certain the address falls into one of the above possibilities. You may want to give it another try on your next issue (hopefully the full mail box is now clear). If it still bounce back...DELETE the address!

11. Should I put every issue of my e-zine onto my web site?

Yes. Create a 'Back Issues' page which provide links to every issue of your e-zine. Give some briefings/highlights for each issue to attract your visitors to click for more info. If your visitors like what they read, they'll most probably subscribe to your e-zine.
