Spending a lot of time looking at Medieval art and architecture gives me such an appreciation for the uniqueness of Angels. They are a brilliant combination of the beauty of the human form and an otherworldy connection to Heaven. They are the intermediate step between the physicality of the human body and Earthly experience and the higher consciousness of the Divine.
Also, who wouldn't want a lovely set of wings?

Angel in Black and White
Watercolor/Ink
10.5 x 15 inches
 Kelly Barrett 2005

The original was done in a light payne's gray watercolor wash, allowed to dry, and then enhanced with Prismacolor Art Markers for the stark black shade. It is one of my favorite pieces and is a transitional work between the usual Black & White charcoal human figure studies and the lighthearted, colorful faeries you find at Mystwood.
