"House of Mirth" Review by WebmistressGillyNet I didn't know exactly what to exspect in this movie. My primary motivation was Gillian, not the story of Lily Bart. For a young girl like me, it was a very unconventional movie, the most people in the movie theatre where older than fifty and I felt quite unfitting. Almost like Lily felt among all those rich and married persons at those parties. She couldn't decide on marry a rich man or her true love. On the one hand she wanted to be in the high society, on the other hand she didn't want to live her prescribed life. Gillian's performance was great, everyone suffered with her. But, even though she gaves her very best, the movie itself wasn't that good. Lily's story is very tragic and Gillian is a great actress, but the fact that the whole movie is just composed of several talks on several places makes it a bit boring. Of course that's the substance of this kind of movies, but just a five-minute "party-scene" without talks showing us the high society, or a dancing scene with Lily - these would be needful loosing and relaxing moments. "House of Mirth" isn't a must-see-movie, except for Gillian fans, because it's her who keeps the movie alive. |
