Michael sighed as he let Isabel out of his apartment. Hours of thinking, and they had come up with no way to get rid of the dreams. She had decided to go on the off chance that one or both of them dozed off on the couch.

Michael strode over to the kitchen and grabbed a carton of orange juice from the fridge. He chugged it down straight from the carton. One of the perks of living alone.

Michael wiped his hand across his mouth and shoved the carton back in the fridge. It was fairly late, but he didn't feel like going to bed. He wasn't tired, and he didn't want to dream.

Michael flopped on the couch and flipped on the television he had bought recently from a second hand store. From the quality of the thing, he expected that at least 5 people had owned it before him. He went through the few channels he got, hoping something would catch his eye. When nothing did, he left it on some late night movie.

He watched it for awhile, but began to get sleepy. His eyes fluttered, but he managed to stay awake. A girl on the screen looked a lot like Maria.

Michael had an idea.

**************************

He rummaged around through the boxes in his bedroom, trying to find what he was looking for. His copy of last year's yearbook. He had kept it, and Michael knew it was around here somewhere.

He finally found it, tucked it the back of his closet. The cover was nearly ripped off, but it didn't matter. There was only one page he really needed.

As he walked over to the bed, he flipped through the pages, trying to find what he was looking for. If Isabel could do this, so could he. He finally found the page. Maria's smiling face, smack dab in the center of the page, looked up at him.

Michael rested his finger on the picture of the blonde girl, and lay back on his bed. He presently fell asleep.

****************

Michael looked around him. He was in the school. No big surprise there. It was where Maria spent a lot of her waking hours.

Maria came around the corner, wearing a strapless red gown with lipstick just as red to match. Michael followed her, unseen, into the gymnasium.

It was all decked out as if for a school dance. Except, there was nobody else but him. Well, the real him and the dream him. Dream Michael was decked out in a tuxedo. When he saw Maria come in, music began to play.

Used to be that I believed in something
Used to be that I believed in love
It's been a long time since I've had that feeling
I could love someone
I could trust someone
I said I'd never let nobody near my heart again darlin'
I said I'd never let nobody in

But if you asked me to
I just might change my mind
And let you in my life forever
If you asked me to
I just might give my heart
And stay here in your arms forever
If you asked me to
If you asked me to

Dream Michael held out his hand to Maria. Understanding, she reached out to him and he encircled her in his arms.

Moving with an agility that the real Michael marveled at, they danced around the floor.

He felt a glimmer of hope. If Maria was still dreaming about him in this way, there might still be a chance for them. He should enter her dreams every night, not only to learn what she wanted from him, but to keep the dreams of Isabel at bay.

Somehow ever since I've been around you
Can't go back to being on my own
Can't help feeling darling since I've found you
That I've found my home
That I'm finally home
I said I'd never let nobody get too close to me darling
I said I needed, needed to be free
(But if you asked me to )

Maria smiled up at her dream Michael. He looked down on her with such a loving expression that the real Michael almost wanted to gag. But, if that was what she wanted in real life, he would give her that.

"I love you Michael," Maria was saying, "I've been waiting my whole life for a love like this. Now that I've found it with you, I am willing to take a risk. I've never opened myself up to a man before, but I'm willing to trust you with my heart."

Asked me to, I will give my world to you baby
I need you now
Ask me to and I'll do anything for you baby, for you baby

If you asked me to
I'd let you in my life forever
If you asked me to

Michael watched on as his dream self smiled down at Maria, and gathered her closer to him. He saw the contented and happy look on Maria's face as they hugged each other tightly.

Michael saw a flash in the dream guy's hands, but didn't realize what it was. As Maria smiled contentedly, his dream self said in a sincere voice, "I love you too Maria", and promptly stuck the knife he held into her back.

"No!" the dream Michael yelled, but of course they couldn't hear him. As he watched in horror, the dream guy let Maria slip to the floor into her pile of blood. He turned away and walked over to a tall, curvaceous blonde who had just appeared. Isabel put her hand on Michael's shoulder, and they walked away from the deeply hurt Maria.

The real Michael began to run over her, but a large pounding began, and the gym began to shake.

****

Michael jumped, startled, coming out of the dream. Someone was knocking insistently on his front door. Michael sat there for a moment, trying to bring himself back to reality.

He swung his legs out of bed, and walked slowly to answer the door. The inceasent knocking had finally stopped.

When he opened the door, there was nobody there. Michael glanced down the hallway to the right and left, but could see nobody.

He was about to shut the door, when he looked down. At his feet was a stone. It was similar to the one supposed communicator that Max was holding for safe-keeping. However, the design on top was a little different.

There was a note beside it. Michael picked it up and read:

Good luck.
