Part Three

"What do you mean Max Evans is the only chance Jim has?" Amy demanded, letting the door swing shut behind her, putting her hands on her hips. "I thought Jim knew nothing about your disappearance."

"He doesn't," Maria said helplessly, casting a worried glance and Michael, sliding nonchalantly off his lap. She realized he wasn't supposed to be here, and she wasn't supposed to be with him.

"What do you mean Max Evans can heal him though?" Amy asked. Her field of vision strayed to Michael who was sitting on the couch awfully close to her daughter. "And while you're answering questions, what is he doing here?"

"Michael came to see me," Maria said pointlessly, trying to think up an excuse for all that had been said. She just threw that out to buy a little time so that she could think. But, she came up with a lot of stuff that sounded so ridiculous she knew her mother would never buy it in a million years.

"Obviously," Amy glowered at her daughter. "I'm angry enough that you get to see Liz after acting so irresponsibly, and I don't want you seeing him."

"It won't happen again mom," Maria said weakly, standing up, praying against all hope that her mom would forget about the stuff with Max.

But, her prayers weren't to be answered, "You didn't answer my question Maria," Amy said, "What did you mean about Max healing Jim?"

"He....uh.....wants to be a doctor and seems to have a knack for seeing whats wrong with people," Maria said lamely.

Amy shook her head, "I'm not stupid Maria. I know that's not what you're talking about. What's wrong with Jim, and what can Max do about it?"

"We don't know whats wrong with the sheriff Mrs.DiLucca," Michael said, standing beside Maria. "And I doubt Max can do anything."

"Did I ask you?" Amy snapped at her least favourite person on this earth right now since he had been out of town with her daughter without Amy's permission. "But I still want to know, what would Max be able to do anyway?"

Maria looked helplessly at Michael. What were they supposed to tell her? Maria wasn't good at thinking up plausible lies quickly. Michael seemed to be having a problem at the moment as well. Unfortunately, Maria's mom wasn't one to let this drop.

"I don't know what to tell you mom," Maria finally said, not knowing what else to say. Figuring that as far as Michael was concerned, anything was better than the real thing.

"How about the truth," Amy demanded. "All you've done since you've come home is either lie or evade all my questions. So, now you're going to tell the truth for once, and explain to me how Max Evans might be able to heal Jim who's lying in a coma at the hospital. Did he hurt him or something?"

Maria shook her head, "Max would never hurt him. Sheriff Valenti's condition was not caused my Max." At least not directly, she though. "He's not a bad person mom. I don't know what else to tell you. There isn't likely anything anyone can do to help the sheriff that a doctor can't do."

"Then why did you say all that stuff about Max?" Amy demanded exasperatedly. "I want to know Maria. Jim has been lying in the hospital with nobody knowing why or even if he will live or die. I hear my daughter say that some teenager may be able to heal him, and I want to know why on earth that is possible when the best doctors have no idea. I just want to know all that is going on!"

"I want to tell you mom," Maria said desperately, getting near tears, "I want to tell you everything, but I can't no matter what you think of me, or do to me, I just can't. You have to accept that."

"Why not?" Amy asked frustratedly, "Why can't you tell me Maria? You know I'll still love you no matter what is going on. You've always been able to be straight with me. We've had a good relationship. Just tell me what is going on."

"I can't mom," Maria said in a hoarse voice. "This is bigger that the relationship between the two of us."

"Maria.." Amy began again slowly, but was cut off by Michael.

His gaze was focused on Maria's desperate face. He prayed he was doing the right thing. He prayed that Amy DiLucca was eccentric enough to take this well.

"Max Evans might be able to heal Sheriff Valenti because he is an alien with healing powers," Michael said quietly.
