"Alien?" Maria's mother repeated in shock, wavering a little on her feet.
Maria wasn't looking at her mother. She had whirled around to face Michael. The truth was the last thing she had expected to hear pour from his mouth. He had just risked everything he had worked so hard to keep a secret. The amazing thing was, it wasn't her who let the cat out of the bag it was him. She wasn't unhappy she could be straight with her mother, she was just as shocked with what Michael said as Amy was.
Michael just nodded in the affirmative to Amy. "We don't know what he can do about comas, but he works miracles with gunshot wounds."
Amy steadied herself on the wall, "Oh my God."
"I know it's hard to believe mom," Maria said, "But it's true. I found it hard to believe when Liz told me too."
"Liz knows," Maria's mom said in her quiet voice that wasn't revealing much. "Well, that figures."
"Max healed her when she got shot at the cafe," Maria told her. "That's how we found out."
Amy just shook her head, not believing. She had lived in a town surrounded by the aura of aliens all her life, and now she was finding out they were real. In a way, it was like finding out Santa Claus was indeed a real person.
"Maria," she said, grabbing her daughter's arms. "Is it drugs? Is that what's going on?"
"What?!" Maria was astonished. Why did everyone always look to drugs as the explanation to everything? "What are you talking about mom? I've never taken drugs in my life. We just told you something completely confidential and serious and you think this is some drug-induces delusion?"
"You can't expect me to believe Max Evans is an alien," Amy said, shaking her head. "Maria, that's just absurd. I mean, even if he was, which I know he's not, that crash was over 50 years ago, and he's what? 16 years old?"
"It's complicated," Maria said frustratedly, "But it's the truth. He's got the power to manipulate molecular structure and heal people. He is not of this world."
Amy shook her head, but she was looking a little wary, like she was beginning to see the light. But, that didn't stop her from saying, "What did they do to you Maria, to make you think this way?"
"It's the truth mom," Maria said, starting to get exasperated with her mother. "I've seen proof, and I know it's true. I saw things before I left, and in the few days I was gone, I saw things you couldn't imagine."
"Something else you should know Mrs.DeLuca," Michael said, coming closer to them, "Max isn't the only one. There are other aliens here in Roswell."
"Like who?" Amy demanded, almost hysterically, "The mayor? The postman? No wait, let me guess, Jim Valenti."
Michael shook his head, and took a deep breath. "No, I am as well, and so is Isabel, Max's sister. Tess was as well."
Maria could see her mom starting to form the question as to how someone used to be an alien and wasn't now, and she hurried past that, "It's true mom. The three of them have known for a long time."
Amy turned to Michael. "Let me guess," she said sarcastically, "You heal people too."
Michael shook his head and looked uncomfortable, "Uh, not exactly. My powers are in a bit of a different area."
"Show her Michael," Maria said with a sigh. "It's the only way to prove that we're not just looney or on drugs."
Reluctantly, Michael raised his hand. Amy watched in fascination as he blasted a hole in the back of the Crashdown. He lowered his hand and mumbled, "I'll have to get Max or Is to fix that."
Amy just shook her head and sat down on the sofa, resting her head in her hands. Maria exchanged a worried glance with Michael. Finally, her mother raised her head.
"Great," she said wearily, "My daughter is dating an alien."
"You believe us," Maria said relieved. She had honestly believed that her mom would have taken this better because of her eccentricity. At least now her mom believed her.
"I suppose so," Amy said. "Of course this may all be some very realistic nightmare, but for now I"m willing to play along."
"Valenti only found out recently," Maria explained. "I'm not going to go into a whole lot of detail, but I swear I will tell you everything later, but we should really just go get Max and see what he can do about Valenti. We think that his coma was caused by these evil aliens that attacked Michael, Max and Isabel awhile ago."
"I see," Amy said. There was very little that could shock her now. Her daughter's boyfriend was an alien, her best friend had not only been shot, but also healed by an alien. Evil aliens in the picture were all just to be taken in stride. "Why don't you just get these evil aliens to undo whatever they did to Jim?"
She watched as her daughter looked back at alien Michael before answering, "They're, uh....rather dead."
"I see," Amy repeated, trying to absorb this new information and convince herself that she was not headed for that looney bin upstate. "I take it that this has something to do with the reason you were gone last week."
Maria nodded, "You could say that." She didn't elaborate any more than that.
"We should really go get Max," Michael said, "See what he can do. For all we now there's some time limit on how long the sheriff can be in the coma before he dies or something."
"I agree," Amy said, maintaining a calm voice, "I want Jim to wake up so I can kick his ass for not telling me what was going on when I was in a panic last week."
"He couldn't tell you mom, just like I couldn't," Maria said, "Don't blame him. This was really serious, and letting anyone in on the secret could have had fatal consequences."
"Whatever," Amy said non-committedly. "Now, let's go get your alien friend and see if we can save him."
"Allright," Maria said, walking towards the door. "But you do realize there is no guarantee that he can do anything."
Amy nodded as Maria walked out into the front. Michael started to follow, but Amy grabbed his arm. She released him quickly, as if burned, but she said, "You'll understand if I don't offer you a ride? You go get Max and meet us at the hospital. I'd like to have a little talk with my daughter."
