STICKY SITUATION

As the bell rang in West Roswell High School, signaling the end of fifth
period, Max held the door for Liz and Isabel as they left their Biology
class.

"Well," Isabel said as she scanned the halls looking for the rest of her
'entourage', as she had taken to calling her friends, "THAT was certainly an
interesting class.  I think that Mr. Schneider has finally lost it."

"I don't think what he was saying was all that crazy," Liz commented as she
changed direction to avoid knocking into a couple that was fighting.  "When
you think about it, he IS right."

"Who's right about what," came Michael's voice from behind the trio.  Max
moved over a bit and Michael took his place next to Liz.

"Oh," Max answered, while smiling, "Liz thinks that it's wrong to help your
fellow man.  She thinks that you should just let your friend in need die."

"Sounds good to me," Michael said.

Liz took a swipe at the back of Max's head, extending her arm all of the way
so she would clear Michael's wide back.  "That is NOT what I said.  I just
think that he made an interesting point."

"Who made an interesting point about what," Maria asked as she joined the
group.

"Did I hear an echo?" Isabel questioned, while smiling at Maria as she
matched step with her.

"Huh?" Maria said, "I HATE coming in late on a conversation," she whined, "I
never know what's going on."

"How is that different from every other conversation you partake in," came
Alex's voice from behind.  He smiled at Maria as he sandwiched himself
between her and Isabel, putting an arm around each girl's shoulder.

"Very funny," she said, sarcastically.

"What are we talking about," questioned Alex.

"I have no idea," Maria answered him, "ask that end of the can-can line."

"GUYS!  Wait up!"  It was Kyle.  As usual, he was late.  It had become
customary for the seven of them to spend six period together.  It was their
free period and they usually just all went and hung out on the bleachers.
He caught up to them and asked the customary, "What's up?"

"That's what I've been trying to find out for the past few minutes," Maria
whispered to him.

As the friends walked out into the sunshine, Max recapped the last class
that he, Isabel and Liz had attended.  Their teacher was talking about the
"Darwin Awards".  The Darwin Awards were basically a compilation of the
dumbest way that people had died in the past year. Mr.. Schneider had gone
on to say that it was good that these people had been taken off the face of
the planet because if they were that stupid, they deserved to be taken out
of the gene pool.

"So," Max said, "Liz agreed with him.  If she sees any of you doing
something completely dumb that puts you in mortal danger, she won't help you
so I suggest you make sure somebody else is there."

"I don't buy that," Maria said, scanning the bleachers for a place that they
could all sit, "I think that if somebody was in dire need of help, no matter
how dumb they were and how much they should not pass on their defective
genes, Liz would help them.  Even if they were below algae on the IQ Scale."
As her eyes came upon a lone figure that was frantically waving at them,
she muttered, "Speaking of which."

"YOO HOO," came a grating yell.

"Oh, goody, It's Tess," Maria said.

"Think we can ditch her," Kyle whispered to her.

"I don't think so," Isabel said, "For all of that empty space between her
ears, that girl is VERY hard to ditch."

"Tell me about it," Max muttered.

By this time, the group had made it to the bleachers where Tess had saved a
row for them.

"Hey guys, isn't this great," she asked, while chewing on her gum like a
cow, "usually there isn't enough room for me by the time I get here so I
came out here this morning at six and waited for you guys to show up."

"Good plan," Michael said.

"Thanks, I knew it was a good one.  Oh my god, did you see what Pam Troy was
wearing today.  Hoe much?  I'm so glad that you broke up with her Lyle, that
was a good move."

"It's Kyle," Alex corrected.

"What Al?" Tess asked and then blew a huge bubble.

"Nothing, forget it," he said.

"What were you guys talking about," Tess said as she fixed her skirt.  To
Tess, fixing a skirt meant hiking it up a few more inches.  Everyone quickly
averted their eyes.

"Darwin," Maria said, without much enthusiasm.

"He's my favorite scientist," Tess said while looking at Max, so she didn't
catch Michael rolling his eyes.  "I mean, without him, we wouldn't have
gravity.  He was a great inventor."

As Tess congratulated herself for sounding so smart, she started to take off
her jacket.  She has showed Max that she was intelligent, so now she needed
to show him why else he should love her.  While taking off her jacket, she
blew a huge bubble.  Almost at the same moment, her jacket got caught on the
metal bleacher behind her, trapping her hands, and her bubble burst,
adhering to her face.  She couldn't breathe.

"You know, Maria," Liz said while Tess struggled to get air into her lungs.
"I think that this would be a wonderful opportunity to show you that you
don't know everything there is to know about me."  With that, Liz crossed
her arms.

Tess quickly turned blue and then stopped her annoying thrashing.

"Liz," Maria said, "for once, I'm glad I'm wrong."

THE END
