"I lived in a darkness, and in darkness there is only solitude."
A Darker Shade of Black... Giovanni's half of the story goes from court, to jail, to Ashley's house. The main idea of it, however, is the same. Giovanni isn't flat-out evil. This was one point I was attempting to deliver and, hopefully, it hit home.
From the beginning, I tried to make his character appear to be more than the 2-d image many seem to see. His appearance in court is calm, collected. Almost, but not quite, the manner of the Boss. The anger is gone and one of the agents is surprised to see this, proving the point of the 'real side' being hidden from the agents.
His acceptance of the verdict was more to his character. There was no yelling, no red face. A simple speech with an angry undertone... and he had reason to be angry. His letter further showed the acceptance to what had happened. There was no resisting, and he knew it.
Though he accepts it, he dislikes it. He loathes the fact that the agents proved themselves to be disloyal. The idea that the loyalty was thin had occured to him before. Only when he is in jail does he realize the full truth of it.
When Geoffrey helps him escape from jail, he is grateful and, at the same time, confused. He and his brother never got along well... not since Geoff had left. Theyhad hated each other, refused to speak, and yet...
Giovanni hadn't realized it in a long time, but he respected his older brother. This is a reflection of his childhood, of the innocence that once seemed strong.
His meeting with Ashley realized his true feelings for her, realising them from where they had been pent up for years. He finally had her, after so long. He'd never been able to talk to anyoen about her, and finalyl was able to talk to the woman herself.
At first he is tentative, as is Ashley. Neither seem sure of what to do. They go from silence, to a debate on right and wrong, to a confession of thier love.
This undying love seems foolish, but it's there for both of them. Giovanni has known it all along, though he doesn't say. It was buried, and had hurt to think of. With Ashley, however, he can finally let it free.
As they are attempting to find a solution, however, hsi life is shot abruptly down. This he takes with surprise and a bit of acceptance, though he struggles a bit. He doesn't want to leave Ashley. The reason he doesn't want to go is for her, and he tries to convey this.
He does, managing to fight the pain and unconciouness. His death is, however, inevitable. he passes before the eyes of his wife, have finally told her he loved her.
They knew, but he was gone.
