Sunday, October 7, 2001, 1:30 p.m.
"Quilting and the Civil War" by Kathy Saunders
This lecture, illustrated with quilts, portrays how women worked in the Civil War effort when quilts were not only domestic necessities, but political and artistic statements, We will learn how the efforts differed in the North and South and discuss quilts that were "hidden in plain sight,"--quilts used to aid the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. Finally, learn how the Civil War has brought women together today from all over the world through the wonderful world of "The Internet" while making a famous Civil War quilt.
Kathy has been quilting for 20 years and has taught for 12 years. Her quilts have appeared in Journey to Jericho and Voices of the Past, Volumes I and II. She had a quilt in Dear Jane, Brenda Papadakis' book on Civil War era quilt maker Jane Stickle. She has had quilts in several competitions including the American Quilter's Society Show in Paducah, KY and Quilt America in Indianapolis, IN. Kathy served on the Executive Committee of the Sew Near to My Heart Quilt Show, a breast cancer awareness quilt show.

Tuesday, October 16, 2001, 7:00 p.m.
"Roots of Racism" by Susan Leslie Lumsden
This lecture is based on the organization and presentation of the "Roots of Racism" quilt exhibit currently touring the United States. This exhibit uses art quilts to help open people's minds to learn more about each other and to mend the rifts of racism.
Susan is a self-taught artist in many areas of fabric manipulation. Her quilts have appeared in a number of exhibitions around the country, including the International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX; MOAK-2000, an invitational show in West Plains, MO; and Art Feast in Springfield, MO. Susan is currently the curator for "Roots of Racism: Ignorance and Fear", a traveling exhibition of art quilts.
