Florida East Coast Rwy - A Personal Perspective
Homestead and all points SouthMiami and
All Points South

This section features scenes from Miami & the abandoned Florida City/Homestead branch South from Miami, including the spur to the former Homestead Air Force Base. Also glimpse scenes from the Florida Keys during the 1980's highlighting remnants of the Overseas Extension to Key West, or visit the famous Gold Coast Railroad Museum.

The Last Grade Crossing on Key Biscayne?? Actually, yes. The beautiful Crandon Gardens is the legacy of what was the Crandon Park Zoo back in the 60's and 70's. A narrow guage tour railroad circled the perimeter of the zoo. This short section of rail is all that remains; the old FEC Princeton station and ACL caboose which were rescued and brought to the present location of the Gold Coast RR once stood for many years just down this little road only yards from the beach of Key Biscayne.

Looking north on the FEC in Miami at Milepost 357
Only a mile or so north of the site of the famed Buena Vista yard in Miami, mile post 357 is silent sentry to what little remains of the FEC's legacy this close to downtown Miami. Only a little ways south of here is the wye which steers traffic west towards the robust Hialeah yard. At MP 357 is 'today's' FEC and the memories of what it once was.

The Last Crossing.
We are looking north across the 344 street grade crossing in south Florida City. In 1982, the rails, crossbucks and lights were still here, but all were gone when this photo was taken in November, 1988 (the Start Horn Ordinance sign was left behind, however). The end of the FEC line for many years is a hundred or so yards south of this crossing.
