Florida East Coast Rwy - A Personal Perspective
Hialeah Yard, 1988FEC Remnants In & Around Miami

Visit remnants and relics of the Florida East Coast Railway in Miami. Many years ago, the FEC dominated over the huge city - but if you look hard, traces still remain of its former downtown presense.

Alex Uribe is another FEC fan who currently lives in Miami. He has sought out these remnants to record them. Below are just a few of his strikingly fantastic images he has captured of what he's found. I am indebted to him for sharing these and granting permission to use the photos here.

The SW 70 street crossing has long since been paved over, but of few of the crossties and unkempt overgrowth testify to the old right-of-way.

Alex says,"Further south on US1, I stopped on SW 98th st which is right under the Dadeland South Metrorail station. The grade crossing on this street was never removed or paved over. As you can also see in that picture, that street is the northern terminus of the South Dade Busway that was built in the late 1990's on the FEC ROW down to Perrine. There are plans to extend this further, all the way to Homestead."

"After checking out these places down south, I went north, looking for the southern most point of connected railroad on this branch ((i.e., the industrial spur headed south from Hialeah & used to connect with the mainline where Dadeland is now)). My search brought me to SW 12th St. The tracks end (with no stopping blocks or rail clamps) about 5 feet north of the 12th st crossing. The last section of track is the bottom end of a switch (completely useless since there is no track south for a train to run on) to a parallel siding track. The industrial building that the siding serviced was demolished, however the siding track is still there."
