| THE TALE OF HAROLD MONKEY | |||||||||||
| One day Harold the monkey went to the park with a woman in a red dress. Together they ran around and played and had a fine time. Then they say down together and had a picnic lunch. "I am going to take a nap," said the woman in the red dress when she finished eating the lunch. "I'm so full and it's so hot and i'm sleepy," And so she laid back and slid her hat over her eyes and went to sleep. When the woman was snoring Harold wandered off towards a crowd of young children who were skipping. "One! Two! Three! Four! Five!" Screamed a young girl with bright red hair as she jumped over the rope over and over. "Six! Seven! Eight! Nine! Ten!" Harold became exited and started to count with her. "Fourty-Nine!" He yelled. "Sixty-Three! Eighty-Four! One Million Four Hundred Sixty Two Thousand and Thirty Two! Three!" "No, no, no!" The young girl skipping shouted. "Now you made me lose count you stupid little monkey!" "That's not how you count," a young boy said. "Fourty-Nine does not come after Ten." Then they all laughed at Harold and called him stupid. "Stupid Harold! Stupid Harold! Stupid Harold!" They said, dancing in a circle around him. Harold was near tears. He walked off and sat down near the sleeping woman. "I'm not stupid," he said to himself. "I know i'm not stupid." And then Harold stoppped being sad. He became mad. Really mad. He went to the high tension power lines and started climbing them. Harold could not count but he could climb. Boy could he climb. Climb climb climb. Harold climbed. "Look at the stupid monkey!" the girl yelled. "He's going to fall!" "He's going to get electrocuted!" the boy said, laughing gleefully. "Stupid Harold! Stupid Harold! Stupid Harold!" They all laughed at him. "My mother said never to play with power lines," the girl said. But Harold merely chuckled to himself. When he had climbed up far enough he reached into his pocket and pulled out a large rubber glove. Harold was not stupid. He knew that the rubber would keep the dangerous electricity away from him. Harold worked. He worked and worked and worked. The children far down below him soon got tired of staring up into the sky at him and went back to their skipping. Harold cut the power power cable and let it fall down. Down, down, down into the swimming pool. The children still did not see him. The children kept on skipping. "It's hot out here!" He said "Aren't you hot?" "I am hot," the little girl with the red hair said. "I'm hot too!" the boy said. "boy am I hot." "I know!" Harold said. "Lets go swimming!" And he started runing towards the swimming pool. All the children dropped thier skippping ropes and ran after him. Down the path they all ran towards the pool. At the last moment Harold jumped into the air, but instead of falling in the water he grabbed a tree limb with his tail. The children did not notice. Into the water they all went, all at the same time. There was a bright light then, and a loud zapping noise. The power went off all over the city. Air conditioners stopped humming. Lights went dark. Televisions flickered off. Computer screens went suddenly black. And then the power came back on again and nobody seemed to care all that much. There was nothing but silence in the park. No more screaming, no more yelling, no more skipping. The woman in the red dress woke up then. Harold sat down beside her. "There you are Harold!" the woman said. "Lets go home!" "Ok." Harold said. "I had fun in the park today!" "I did too Harold," the woman in the red dress said. "I did too." |
