After recieving an ominous letter from her mother warning her to go into hiding until after her 15th birthday has passed, a worried Alyssa Hamilton leaves her boarding school and returns home for the first time in three years, only to find that her beloved mother is gone. A meeting with a mysterious man both frightens her and leads her to assume that something terrible has happened to her mother, who is the only family she has left after the death of her father when she was an infant and her grandfather's disappearance three years prior. While searching the house for any trace of her mother or where she may have gone, she starts to hear a piano playing and runs from the room in terror and somehow finds herself in London during World War II.
