| The International Study Centre at Herstmonceux Castle |
| Home to over 500 years of history, live in professors and me for the next 8 months, Herstmonceux is a beautiful castle that was built in the 15 century. For ten years, this castle has also been the home base for the International Study Centre, a recognized world-class institution. . Queen's was given Herstmonceux castle a decade ago from Dr. Afred Bader and his wife, Isabel. Bader, one of the university's most distinguished alumni, has given support to universities and institutions all over. The Baders have been very generous towards Queen's, this castle being just one of many gifts and donations. Austrian Alfred Bader was a Jewish teenager in the thirties and, escaping the Nazis, fled to Enland in 1938. He was then sent to an internment camp in Canada near Montreal. He continued his studies there and applied to several prominent Canadian universities once he was released. Queen's was the ony school to offer Bader admission, and he later wrote, "I was determined to do my best. Two years in the camp, education without distraction, followed by four years at Queen's was a great beginning for a successful life." Dr. Bader first recieved degrees, at Queen's, in engineering and continued his education in graduate studies at Harvard. Afterwards, he began his own international chemical company which has now become one of the most successful in the world. He is, quite possibly the most prominent Rembrandt collector and dealer and is a high profile philanthropist, known worldwide for his generosity. And it is this generosity that has touched so many education institutions across the continent. |
