Mary Van Deusen
Art Teacher, High School Special
Education
One of the greatest joys of my job
is seeing the results; watching the progress many of our students make. This is
the last chance to make their school experience into a positive one and that is
a rewarding challenge for me.
As the art teacher, I also enjoy
when students come into my class thinking art is such a waste of time, but find
some value there for them after all. Students who are convinced they cannot
draw anything, have no ability, etc. proudly showing their work to others –
I believe this is planting a
kernel of self-esteem that goes beyond merely completing an assignment; that
they can carry this small confidence through life that they can do things they
previously thought they could not.
“Think that you can and you will.”
