Usually when people hear or read the words "Great Muta" they think: "mist, talent, and a legend". Muta is possibly the most well known Japanese wrestler here in America, and he is the man who has gotten many Americans to turn their heads to Puroresu. Simply put, Muta is a living legend.
He started his career out in Puerto Rico, in a promotion called the WWC under the name White Ninja. He won two titles there, the Puerto Rican Heavyweight title, and the Television title. Later during his WWC days, he became known as what we all know him as today, The Great Muta.
Shortly after becoming The Great Muta, Keiji moved onto a bigger promotion, New Japan Pro Wrestling. Muta got people to turn their heads, with his awesome entrance attire, and the puzzling mist, he left people asking themselves: "Where does the mist come from?", and left promoters saying: "This guy's got talent.". Muta then went to WCW, then known as NWA, while under NJPW contract, for a 6 year off and on stay.
While in the Southern owned promotion, Muta gathered a fan base. Several American wrestling fans had never seen anyone like him, and his styled made announcers stumble over their words. While in the NWA, he captured the NWA Heavyweight title in 1993. In late 1994, Muta returned to NJPW.
Over the years, Muta captured the IWGP Heavyweight and Tag titles many times, and he was deserving of each victory. While Muta was working like there was no tomorrow, his knees were slowly getting worse and worse. The high flying had taken its toll, and Muta now has to get his knees drained every year. It has effected his in-ring abilities somewhat, and, at times, is noticable.
In 1997, Muta returned, again, to WCW to participate in the nWo, which he was already a part of in Japan. Muta had matches against several WCW jobbers, and wasn't used correctly. Muta went back to NJPW a few months later.
In 1998, Muta transformed into his real life name, Keiji Mutoh, and wrestled under a completely different personality. Gone were the violent after-match attacks, and the cravings for seeing human blood drip onto the mat. But what replaced those were the mat submissions and extreme effort Mutoh put into his matches. He has always given 110%, but as Mutoh, it seemed as if he were working harder.
In mid 1999, Mutoh became Muta again, and in late June of 2000, The Great Muta signed a 6 month deal with WCW again, and he will be on American television for all Muta fans to enjoy.
Muta deserves every bit of respect, wins, cheers, titles, and tributes he gets, because Muta has done so much for the business of professional wrestling. Muta was one of the first people to do the moonsault in the states, and many wrestlers today try to imitate his in-ring mannerisms, but fail, because there is only one true Great One, and he is the Greatest Muta. His name: THE GREAT MUTA.
