To celebrate my parents' 50th wedding anniversary, my brother,
my sister and I decided to take them on a Caribbean cruise in lieu of an anniversary
party. None of us had ever been on a cruise before. Words cannot express what
a wonderful time we had. We sailed on a magnificient ship, saw some spectacular
sights, and did some great things, but the best part of it was the fact that I took the
trip with my family.
Sadly, it turned out to be our last vacation with the whole family.
My father passed away in April due to complications from heart bypass surgery. He was 73.
Prior to his death, I looked upon that vacation as a wonderful experience; easily the
best vacation I've ever taken. Recently, though, I've come to view it in a different light.
Let me preface this by saying that I'm not an overly religious man. However, that vacation
was so well-executed, so perfect, and so special for all of us that it can't be a conicidence.
My siblings and I thought we were giving my parents that vacation as a gift. It turns out, we're
the ones who got the gift. An incredible, priceless gift that I will hold close to my heart forever.
