  6. Can the kunyah be used as a name?

1) What kind of name should be given to children?

From Nazim of jami' C-Madrasah al-Baqiyaat ocs.Salihaat, Waylor.
Answer 1)
The Hadith says that the names dear to Allah are Abdullah, Abdur Rahman. However in these times people omit the word Abd call a person Rahman instead of Abdur Rahman, Karim instead of Abdul Karim. This is insulting so it is better to avoid such names but if anyone keeps these names then he must call with the full name Abdur Rahman. If anyone calls without Abd then the ruling must be explained to him then and there and asked to call with Abd as mentioned in Rudd al-Muhtar and Alamgiri.
The names of Prophet, Ahmad, Muhammad and Ibrahim are also preferred.

From B. Jami' Darul-Islam, Umarabad.
Answer 2)
Give good names to children. A hadith mentions to name your child Abdur-Rahman. However it is not necessary to give these very names. This, Prophet (S.A.W.) had named his grand children Husan and Husayn (R.A.). He changed a name if it had a wrong connotation.

From Darul-Ifta Darul-Uloom, Deoband.
Answer 3)
Names of the Prophets (A.S.) and the companions (R.A.) should be chosen for children. Or names which have Abd before Alah, or Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem, Al-Karim Al-Sattar, etc. The prophet (S.A.W.) has said......
"Keep names of the Prophets. The dearest names to Allah are Abdullah (Abd Allah) and Abdur Rahman. Harith and Hamam are names which reflect truthfulness. The vilest of names are Harb and Murrah"

2) Is it correct to give names like Abdul Mannah, Abdul Muttalib. Abdun Nabi. Abdul Hasan, Abdul Husayn, Abdul Ka'bah?

From Nazim of jami' C-Madrasah al-Baqiyaat ocs.Salihaat, Waylor.
Answer 1)
It is not allowed to give such names because Muttalib, Hasan, Husayns are not attributes of Allah. These names may be kept without combination with Abd but merely Muhammad Hasan, Muhammad Husayn. As for Munaf, it is the name of an idol; hence, Abd Munaf must never be kept.

From B. Jami' Darul-Islam, Umarabad.
Answer 2)
No. The asma al-husna are attributes and one can declare servitude to Allah with his name and not with anyone else.

From Darul-Ifta Darul-Uloom, Deoband.
Answer 3)
It is not proper to give these names. The hadith prohibits us to call our slaves, "My abd (slave) or amati (female slave). All of you are slaves of Allah and your women His female slaves.

3) Is it correct to turn the pages of the Quran at random to choose a name from it?

From Nazim of jami' C-Madrasah al-Baqiyaat ocs.Salihaat, Waylor.
Answer 1) We have no support for this in books of Hadith and fiqh. It is not disallowed if one of the approved names is chosen in this manner.

From B. Jami' Darul-Islam, Umarabad.
Answer 2)
If this method is not regarded as blessed by Shariah and adopted on one's own then there seems to be no wrong in it.

From Darul-Ifta Darul-Uloom, Deoband.
Answer 3)
There is no evidence  of this method in shariah (rather it is improper).

4) Is it correct, as some people do, to give a name which has the same first letter as the name of the day of the birth of the child?

From Nazim of jami' C-Madrasah al-Baqiyaat ocs.Salihaat, Waylor.
Answer 1)
We have no evidence for it.

From B. Jami' Darul-Islam, Umarabad.
Answer 2)
This does not seem to be wrong if one does not believe the practise to be approved in Shariah. Some people do give historical names.

From Darul-Ifta Darul-Uloom, Deoband.
Answer 3)
This method is too wrong.

5) Is the belief correct that the fire of Hell will not touch one whose name is made up of Ahmad or Muhammad?

From Nazim of jami' C-Madrasah al-Baqiyaat ocs.Salihaat, Waylor.
Answer 1)
It is stated in Radd al-Muhtar, "If anyone keeps his child's name Muhammad then the person who gave it and the child will go to paradise."

From B. Jami' Darul-Islam, Umarabad.
Answer 2) This is a baseless idea. It is wrong and there is no evidence for it.

From Darul-Ifta Darul-Uloom, Deoband.
Answer 3)
It is not supported by any authentic Hadith.

6) Can the kunyah be used as a name?

From Nazim of jami' C-Madrasah al-Baqiyaat ocs.Salihaat, Waylor.
Answer 1) It is allowed if an approved name is selected.

From B. Jami' Darul-Islam, Umarabad.
Answer 2)
There is no harm in having the same name as kunyah. The Asma Rijaal does list many names under Kunyah like Abu Hurayrah, Abu Ubaydah, etc. Even young children can have a kunyah. The Prophet (S.A.W.) had said to a child, "O Abu Umayr what happened to Numayr?" Allah knows best what is true.

From Darul-Ifta Darul-Uloom, Deoband.
Answer 3)
The Kunyah may be used as a name. Allah knows best.
