poem #78

i'm searching for the answers
to the haunting questioning
am i strong enough to matter
do i need this endless string
of lives laid down for friendship
can i make do with nothing
am i strong enough to matter
can you hear the voice i bring?

if i want out of this puzzle
will i give up everything?
all the spinnings of my island
are so sad and dizzying
i close it all around me
so i never need a thing
am i strong enough to matter
don't need help with anything

you coax me to come closer
only i'm not listening
for this ride goes on forever
so in fear i'm readying
myself for all that's out there
who'll sip steady from my spring
am i strong enough to matter
i won't heed their beckoning

i lick my wounds in private
i can taste the bitter sting
of your life laid down for friendship
is that what your offering?
my words will leave you waiting
on tunes i promised i would sing
am i strong enough to matter
despite my losing everything?

so here's my warning label
though i run from capturing
my actions don't come easy
i'm just too scared to change a thing
i'll push you all forever
i'll relish in your fancying
but will my strength be any matter
when i'm left without a thing
