'Problem Trains' a closer view

The composition 'Problem trains' shows how three parts on a musical score should be written using traditional notation.

The notation shows:

  1. Three parts with the staves linked together

  2. There are 4 beats to each bar

  3. the notes in the composition are all on beats

  4. There is no treble or bass clef and so no definite pitch.

  5. The notation of words is under an unpitched rhythm.

Discussion activity

  1. In groups spend no more than 5 minutes to find and write down up to more facts about the music opposite.

  2. If possible use the following words.

  3. Bars, parts, lyrics, accent, repeat, crotchet, rests

Ideas for performing in a group

  1. The entire group sing each part together.

  2. Count the rests/times silences out loud then in your heads

  3.  Divide the music between you and perform 'Problem Trains' in a dramatic way (Accent the first sounds in every bar)

  4. Add your own indications of speed, and dynamic. (Try different dynamics for each part in some places.

  5.  Add your own pitch
