Brief 3: Classical Styles

Every two weeks a different person in the group will be responsible for the composition.  The composer can use any musical ideas or instruments, which the group can learn in 30 minutes. The composition however must have at least three features used by composers at the time.

RENAISSANCE

  1. Use of fa la la chorus or end of line.
  2. A constant beat or rhythm, changing instrument. 
  3. Rhyming words which tell a story.

BAROQUE

  1. Whole group contrasted with 2 players.
  2. Lively long rhythmic tunes.
  3. Use of trills.

CLASSICAL

  1. A call to attention at the start
  2. Whole group gradually louder or gradually quieter.
  3. Use of slurs and short musical phrases.

ROMANTIC

  1. Tells a story
  2. Soloist answered by group.
  3. A change of mood.

20TH CENTURY

  1. Jazz rhythms.
  2. Using original vocal or instrumental effects.
  3. Adding more parts as the piece progresses.
