| Sending White Roses (Page 1 of 3) |
| Scene 1: Joanna, a girl who is about 16, is at a bus stop and is waiting for her bus to come. She is constantly checking her watch, as if in a hurry. It is raining and she is alone. The bag in her hand is light, and her coat is old and worn, barely protecting her from the cold rain. A car drives up and a man named Chase, who is not too much older than her, gets out of the car. He goes up to her and tries to reason with her: Chase: Come on out of the rain, theres no way to hide. You and I both know that theres no easy way out of this. Im sorry about everything that has happened Joanna, but running isnt the answer. Joanna looks up at him. Joanna: Well, at least Im not at THAT place! Ill go anywhere but there, and you know it! And dont think you can stop me, this is a free country if you havent noticed. Chase: But wouldnt you feel weird in a strange place with no money, home, or friends? Pause. Joanna: Ill learn to adjust. And isnt home a strange place anyways! Chase: Please dont go . . . If you dont want to go home, then you can stay over at my place, I have an extra room . . . you even get your own bathroom . . . just please dont go. Joanna looks at him suspiciously. Joanna: (reluctantly) Okay . . . Chase: Good! I knew you would cave. Now come on, lets get out of the rain. Chase leads Joanna into his car and they drive off. Scene 2: Joanna and Chase are in a kitchen. Joanna is at the table with a blanket around her and is drinking hot chocolate with her eyes down. Chase is sitting across the table reading a newspaper. Chase: Why a bus? Why not hitchhiking? Dont you know its quicker. Joanna looks up from her drink. Joanna: What does it matter to you, Chase? You didnt have to play Superman, you know. I would have been fine. Chase: You shouldnt even try to run away. Joanna: What do you mean?! Is it because you dont think I have a reason! I have my reason, and you know it too! He could have killed me any second I was in that house! Hes too much for me, theres nothing I can do... I hate it! Im so helpless when Im there. Im like an animal being punished for so many things... so many... If only he would stop drinking, but he wont. I know better than to think hell ever stop. Joanna stands up and walks to a side of the stage to dry her tears. Chase gets up and looks at her concerned, but knows he cant do anything to help. His eyes go down and she knows that he has no answer. Joanna: (more calm then before) It will take a long time before Im officially old enough to run away, but it will take so long to wait. Who knows if I will make it..its just that I... Chase: You dont have to tell me now, its ok... Joanna: No its not! You dont understand anything! Joanna walks out and Chase slowly walks the other way, giving her her space. Scene 3: Joanna is in front of a house that is practically torn down. She reluctantly goes up the steps, changes her mind suddenly, and turns around. I man, her father, is looking at her like hes mad. He is wearing ripped up cloths, but it not drunk. Joanna looks scared and tries to run away, but he grabs her arm and stops her. Father: I heard you tried to runaway...why? He gets no answer. Joanna pushes her lips together and shakes her head no. Tell me now before I beat the life outta you, girl! Joanna tries running away, but cant. Scene ends with the lights fading and Joanna screaming. Scene 4: Chase is in a hospital in his male nurse outfit. He is taking a shift in the hospital and is going from new patient to another new patient. He then sees Joanna, who is on one of the stretchers. He then goes up to her. Chase: Joanna! What happened to you? Did he do this to you? Joanna moans and nods her head. Chase looks horrified and then motions with his hands for more doctors standing by. They take her away to treat her and Chase follows them. Chase: How bad is it? Doctor 1: She needs attention on all of these cuts, but they will more likely heal soon. Doctor 2: This looks like a domestic wound. Chase, do you know who might have done this? Chase: Yes, and I know her too. (More desperate) Is there anything I could do? Doctor 2: Well, since youre not allowed to treat her, under hospital regulations, I will. Ill make sure enough attention is payed to her. Doctor 1 nods and Chase looks relieved. Chase: (While talking, Chase is looking down at Joanna on the stretcher.) I think Ill take a break. The stretcher rolls off the stage to be examined and Doctor 1 and 2 discuss Joannas condition: Doctor 1: Shes not going to make it, is she? Doctor 2: No, those wounds looked pretty bad . . . there might even be internal bleeding. He sighs. They both look off the side of the stage where Chase rolled off. |
