Comments on Katie Davis-Steward's poem "The Best Cup of Coffee"
by Andrew Angus

Title of poem: The Best Cup of Coffee
Source: The Beginning of the Tumbling (2004)
Rating: 5 olives

Katie Davis-Steward's poem "The Best Cup of Coffee" is one Katie's best poem in her book of poems "The Beginning of the Tumbling" released by Trafford in 2004. The poem  is found in page 20 of her book..

The poem is a free verse in one stanza of 25 lines. This poem is about waking up. The poem reveals two events that are  almost universal  in urban  or rural setting-  the desire to wake up early and the desire to stay or remain  awake. .

There is one major character in the poem - the female character, the poet herself. and the two minor characters in the poem are the male character, Bruce and the dog.

You can see in the poem how the female character wants to stay awake. She stays awake by drinking three cups of coffee.

There are many ways to stay awake - exercise, pinching oneself, turning on the TV, turning on the radio loud, drinking hot coffee or hot choco, etc.

The female character  in the poem likes to drink three cups of coffee at dawn to stay awake. She feels so good and so awake in her second cup of coffee and looks forward to her third cup of coffee.

The desire to stay  awake is prevalent in highly industrilalized countries because the people in such countries live  a fast-paced lifestyle.  The desire to remain awake is very strong among people who are very busy or  people who feel they have to accomplish something great in their life. There is no time for long sleep. Sleep should be short as possible. There is a stong desire to fight the body's natural tendency to want  to sleep long.

This poem is nominated by Muses Review "The Best Poem of the Year 2004" because the poet succeeds in making us feel the joy  and  desire to stay awake. (end) .

Short Comments on  Jill Terry's Poem "The Season of You
by Andrew Angus

Title of poem: The Season of You
Source: S
hadows of My Soul  (2004)
Rating: 5 olives

Jill's poem 'The Season of You'  is one of the  best poems in her book of poems
Shadows of My Soul released in November 2004.

The poem is five stanzas and 20 lines long.  This poem is wonderful because this poem reminds us of the classic fairy tale 'Beauty and the Beast'.

The poem is romantically  sensual but not vulgar. This poem also reminds us of the classic sensual romantic poem "To His Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell (1621-1678).

The poem 'The Season of You' ends in the fifth stanza:

The things that now I'm thinking
I'd like to do with you
I understand this call of the wild
Oh, to tame the beast  in you-

Jill's poem is so memorable to me that I believe this  poem will be a classic like the poem "To His Coy Mistress".  Hence, this poem is nominated by Muses Review -Best Poem of the Year 2004. (end)

Short Comments on Randy L. Redmond's poem "The Creek"
by Andrew Angus

Title of poem: The Creek
Source: Tears rolling down the heartstring (2004)
Rating: 5 olives

Randy's poem "The Creek" is three stanzas  organized as  9 lines, 8 lines, 9 lines. A total of 26 lines. This poem is semi-rhymed and is found on page 53.

This poem is a scenic description of the creek during the four seasons- spring, summer, autumn and winter. What makes this poem excellent  is how Randy uses the creek as a simile and  metaphor for romantic love with the female character in the poem This poem is nominated  Muses Review - Best Poem of the Year 2004.
