Joseph Powell .Poet from California
A Freak's Blues

I

They think
I don't know
That they
talk about
me
behind my back
Or
they don't care.
And it
doesn't matter
Really.
I am
what
I am
A freak
without form
or
comeliness
that others
would
be attracted to;
An anomaly
of God's;
the subject
of
books written
by the likes of
Hugo and Shelley;
An abomination
in the eyes
of those
who would
deem themselves
beautiful.

Powell's poem "On Quill St." and "Freak's Blues" are nominated  Best Poem of th Year 2004 by Muses Review
II

Hideous,
unknowable,
unlovable,
what fair
creature
would ever
dare
to discover
the love
I possess
in my
heart;
the sorrow
that grips
my soul;
the anguish
that haunts
my dreams;
would dare
to look
past
the ugliness
to see
the saint
within;
the kindly lover;
the passionate poet;
the real beauty
of me.

III

I believe
heaven
weeps for
those
who are deemed
unworthy
of love,
unworthy
of knowing
as
I stand
in the
shadows
and await
those tears
to
fall and
comfort
me.

Poem Review by Andrew Angus

Title of Poem: A Freak's Blues
Poet: Joseph Powell
Source:
Mofo' Risin' (2004)
Rating: 4 laurels out of 5 laurels.

Some of Joseph Powell's poems are very interesting. And this poem 'A Freak's Blues' caught my attention.

While reading this poem, what entered in my mind was the movie "The Elephant Man" which our high school teacher required us to make a report.

How does it feel to look strange or look different or look physically ugly?

This is what the poem is all about.

Joseph mentions two famous writers Hugo and Shelley in his poem.

Hugo wrote the classic novel.  "Hunchback of Notredame".  Shelley wrote the classic novel - "Frankenstein". Both famous  writers wrote about an ugly human or humans with deformity.

The poem has three stanzas. 34, 29 , 19 lines. A total of 82 lines.

The character in the poem has a physical deformity. Probably a hunchback or a person who looks like Frankenstein's creature.

The character in the poem longs to be loved for his inner being and not his outer self. The character in the poem considers himself a "saint within", "kindly lover" and a "passionate poet" despite his physical deformity.

The words of this  poem is the opposite of a lyrics of popular song that goes  like this - "Loving you is so easy because you are beautiful...."

The poet succeeds it making the poem memorable in my mind when he mentioned two famous writers in his poem. It makes me pause and think what if I were the character in the poem.

Am I lucky that I was not born without physical defects? Why are people born with physical defects in the first place?

This poem is really a very emotionally painful poem.

Hence, this poem is nominated Best Poem of the Year 2004 by Muses Review.
