Poem Review by Andrew Angus

Title of Poem:
At the racetrack
Poet:
Henry Denander (Sweden)
Source:
Last Call: The Legacy of Charles Bukowski (2004)
Rating:
4.5 laurels out of 5 laurels.

Henry's poem "At the racetrack" is a free verse poem in five stanzas. The stanzas have different number of lines - 3,3, 5, 5, 4.

The poet reveals his passion for racehorse when he reached his 40s.

The poet learned to like the game  of racehorse gradually. When he was a child he was initiated to the game of horseracing when he visited his uncle who lives near a racetrack. He never liked and  betted on racehorse when he was a kid  but he started to like and bet on racehorses when he reached his 40's.

The poet seems to be following the footsteps of his uncle or a well-known writer/poet Charles Bukowski.

The poem begins like this:

"On eBay I bought four whisky glasses from
Santa Anita Park; this was Charles Bukowski's
favorite race track and he spent a lot of time there."

The poem ends like this:

"And now, 45 yers later, here I am
with my large Santa Anita whisky tumbler
with the engraved horses and jockeys
a couple of ice cubes and a large splash
of Glenlivet whisky.

Maybe I'm slowly
beginning to understand
the art of horseracing
afterall."

The poem reveals the poet's  passion for drinking and horse racing .

Are poets and writers fascinated by horserace?

I love to watch horserace on TV sometimes. But I have never betted on horseraces.

What is in horserace that fascinates poets and non-poets alike?

Is it the money that can be won in the horserace or the thrill of seeing horses competing in a race?

This poem is nominated Best Poem of the Year 2004 for 2005 Muses Prize.

On eBay I bought four whisky glasses from
Santa Anita Park; this was Charles Bukowski's
favorite race track and he spent a lot of time there.

I've never betted on the horses myself but there was
a race track close to our summer house in Sweden
and I went there when I was a kid.

I never really liked to watch
I came to see my uncle Allan
regular at the track. I liked him a lot and he
always gave me money for ice cream.
so even even without betting I came out ahead.

And now, 45 years later, here I am
with my large Santa Anita whisky tumbler
with the engraved horses and jockeys
a couple of ice cubes and a large splash
of Glenlivet whisky.

Maybe I'm slowly
beginning to understand
the art of horseracing
afterall.
