"Music has been a part of my life since I was born on August 7th, 1985. My father, Ron Roberts, spent 20 years as a junior high band director and is the biggest influence on my musical career. He has taught me just about everything I know about jazz and blues saxophone playing," says Joel. After doing all things musical at Massac County High School in Metropolis, IL, Joel graduated in 2003 and moved his musical career to Murray, Kentucky. Joel is currently in his final year of study at Murray State University, set to graduate in May with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. At MSU he is or has been a member of Racer Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble and Combo, Saxophone Quartet and Symphony Orchestra. As a member of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble he performed in New York City’s prestigious Carnegie Hall. He has studied saxophone under his father, and MSU professor of saxophone, Mr. Scott Erickson. He has represented Murray State in three Intercollegiate Jazz Ensembles and one Intercollegiate Wind Ensemble. He is an active member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity and has served in the offices of Warden, Music Director and President. He has been actively involved in Campus Lights, serving on the tech crew, in the pit orchestra, as the House Manager and the Chair of the Board of Producers. Outside of Murray State, Joel has participated in the Paducah Concert Band, Paducah Jazz Ensemble, and pit orchestras at the Market House Theater and has shared the stage with the likes of Bob Newhart, Terry Mike Jeffery, Marie Osmond, Chris Vadala and Jamey Abersold. In July 2004, Joel joined the Murr-Vegas All Stars, a rhythm and blues band based in Murray, Kentucky, in which he plays saxophones. About joining Murr-Vegas Joel says, "Stephen sent me a message on MSN messenger asking me if I wanted to be in his band, we talked about it for a while and I said, ‘sure, why not.’ It was a decision that I have never regretted as it opened my eyes and ears to a many different styles of music and introduced me to a bunch of interesting people." They can be found playing in Murray and all around the surrounding area. Joel currently teaches private saxophone lessons at Graves County High School, serves as their woodwind technician during marching band season, has his own private saxophone studio and is an assistant manager with Kentucky Lake Oil Company and Pockets Convenience Stores. He currently resides in Murray, Kentucky with his wife Lee Ann and their dogs, Nolan and Lil’ Bit.
