Rowan's Battle Of Britain Campaign War Story - August 14th, 1940
|
|
August
14th, 1940. Sector radios to our squadron dispatch there are 30+
inbound towards Tangmere AF. I am currently flying with 64 squadron out
of Southern London. We are a spitfire crew. I love the handling and
speed of this bird in comparison to the Hurri, but the Hurri does have
a close in punch and is rather stable as a gun platform.
We takeoff with plenty of time to intercept the inbound flight of
Stukas. Upon crossing over the Channel we see out prey.

I call "Bandits"! and our flight takes action. Half the flight
maintains a screen against inbound escorting 109s and the lead flight
moves upon the slow and burdened Stukas.
I score several hits on two passes, taking one Stuka out of action and
forcing two others to drop payload. Hopefully a few soldiers and pilots
on the ground will live for that.
After a third pass, I hear "yellow leader, you have a bandit on your
6." Its too late. Half my wing is nearly sheered clean off.

I do have enough time to bail though and see the enemy flight of Stukas
head relatively unscathed towards Tangmere. Hope they get their asses
reamed on the way out.
