Credits

The credit system begins in Senior 1 in all Manitoba High Schools.

A credit is a course which has a credit value. Most courses offered are 1 credit each. Those that have a lesser or greater value than 1 are specified in this handbook. The minimum required credits for a High School Diploma is 28.0

Course Numbering

The numbering system is made up of three characters, the first and second being numerals and the third a letter. The first character represents the grade level, the second, the origin of development, and the third the level or difficulty or specialization.

  • Senior 2
  • Senior 3

Possible Patterns for Credit - Accumulating Credits for Graduation

Senior 1 9 credits is the course load
Senior 2 minimum course load is 8 credits
Senior 3 minimum course load is 6 credits
Senior 4 minimum is the number of credits required to graduate. Students may take more than the 28 credit requirements to a maximum of 8, if room exists in the courses requested. However, 9 credits may be taken only if approved by the principal.

Prerequisite

A prerequisite is a condition that must/should be met before a course is taken. Two kinds of prerequisites exist:

  • course prerequisites must be met, e.g. Chemistry 30S is a prerequisite for Chemistry 40S
  • mark prerequisites should be met, e.g. A final mark of 60% or better in Pre-Calculus Math 30S is the prerequisite for taking Pre-Calculus Math 40S.
  The purpose of the prerequisite:

The school has the responsibility to set prerequisites in courses for the benefit of students. Prerequisites are not intended to restrict any student's educational program. They are intended to guide the student in wise course selections.
