The OMSS 1999-2000 committee came into office during the 2nd semester of 1999.  We were enthusiastic and had many dreams and visions.  We wanted to achieve the aims of OMSS; to facilitate and aid the academic and social needs of the overseas medical students and more importantly, to foster a better understanding and increase interactions between the overseas students and our local Australian colleagues.  I believe that we have fulfilled our goals via the many events that we have organized in 1999.

Of course, many of the traditional OMSS events were organised again and these included:

  • International Orientation 1999 and Orientation 1999
  • Buddy system and free lunch
  • OMSS Annual Dinner 1999
  • International Orientation 2000
  • Orientation 2000
  • Buddy system 2000
In addition, thanks to the enthusiasm and cohesiveness of the OMSS Committee members, we were able to expand on our ˇ§traditionalˇ¨ events to include also:
  • First Year Basketball Tournament
  • Ski Trip '99 to Mt. Buller
  • 3rd Year Group Photo
  • Internship Placement Seminar for International Students
  • Monash vs. Melbourne Itˇ¦s WAR* Badminton Tournament
  • Overseas Law vs. Med Soccer Challenge
  • Establishing a Help-line for incoming international medical students (its publicity included a letter being sent to their home overseas before their arrival in Melbourne)
  • Orientation 2000 Bowling trip
  • OMSS Horse Riding Trip 2000
  • The creation of a new OMSS email account ([email protected])
To keep in pace with the rapidly advancing Internet, OMSS went online.  A web-site (www.geocities.com/muomss) was established this year with comprehensive links including lecture notes, updates on internship matters, electronic medical journals, newspapers (local and overseas) and many others.  This has enabled better communications with both past and present students.  The annual Alternative survival guide and tri-annual Syncytium further provides an insight into the life and issues of being a medical student.

In terms of representational role, I was able to renew ties with the Melbourne University Overseas Students Society (MUOSS), the Medical Studentsˇ¦ Society (MSS) and with the Faculty of Medicine.  Thanks to the generosity and care of the Faculty of Medicineˇ¦s Dean (Professor Richard Larkins), OMSS was invited to sit in at the New Curriculum Committee and the Internationalization of Health Committee (both associated with the Faculty of Medicine) for the first time.  Moreover, I was able to represent the overseas students in attending the Faculty Planning Conference held over the weekend in rural Victoria.

Other functions that I have attended on behalf on OMSS included the International Medical University (IMU) Students Welcome lunch, Final year international studentsˇ¦ farewell lunch and Seminar on Changes to Immigration Regulations for International Students.

I would like to conclude my report by thanking the Dean of Medicine, Professor Richard Larkins, for being so generous and taking such a keen interest in supporting the international students individually and also via OMSS; the staff and co-ordinators at the Medical Faculty Office; Angie from the Student Union; Shiva and Ashley, the medical building supervisors; The Faculty of Education Unit on level 7 for loaning us the PBL rooms; Betty Au and Ilana Rischin, ESL lecturers and the Commercial Sponsors of our OMSS events throughout the year.

What I, as the President of the OMSS Committee 1999-2000, have gained is not the amount of activities we organised, rather it is the privilege of being able to work together with the most creative, enthusiastic (most of the time) and interesting people.  It goes without saying that without the support from my committee members, nothing would have been possible.  Thank you especially to Ying Ruey (Vice President) for his continuous support throughout the whole year, Damien (treasurer) for being so good in getting money from sponsors, Gary (Editor) for the huge job of publishing the Alternative, Jason (GC) for your art in all the events, Wee Kheng (Webmaster) for the web-site (surprise!), Suat-Li (Secretary) for ringing people up and artistic decorations, Mark (GC) for the Soccer tournament, Joe (GC) for providing humour and Steve (GC) for organising the 3rd year photo.  Thank you also to the non-committee members, Annie and Joseph for lending us some extra hands during the busy periods.

Lastly, I am delighted to report that the OMSS Committee 1999-2000 has enjoyed a very successful term.  We were able to organise the traditional events as well as innovated many more new activities.  The OMSS Committee 1999-2000 walked into the room as a bunch of strangers (we were so tensed at the first meeting) and walked out as friends.  Hopefully, we will remain this way and stay in touch.  Congratulations to the new president, Jason Lee and good luck to the incoming OMSS Committee 2000-2001!
