On Vrisehikan, the middle of November, in the Malayalam calendar, one can hear cries such as ‘Swami Saranam Ayyappa’ the ‘Hari hara sutane Saranam Ayyappa’ converging at Sabari Malai, the abode of Lord Ayyappan. The pilgrimage to Swami Ayyappan’s abode is to cleanse oneself of all evils and realize brotherhood of mankind of all races and religions. Makara Villaku is celebrated in his name. Oil lamps are laid along the side of the steps leading to the entrance of his sanctum enacting the ardous and long trek to his abode.
