Early history told by William Vaughn may have been copied by Octa Vaughnin the 1950s
Jarret & Frances Tidwell Vaughn and family, William Allen, Mansel, Lucyand Susan came to Arkansas from Georgia in 1869. They settled severalmiles below Dardanelle on the Widow Brown's farm (near the watering pond& now owned by Mrs. Birtha Keys). Jarret Vaughn built a one room cabinPaw-Paw poles for his family to live in on first arriving at the place.Jarret and sons cleared land on the Brown farm.
In the 1870's the Vaughn family removed to the Jim Cole farm near the
Brown farm and what is now known as the P.G. Blevins farm. The family
lived in a little two roomhouse back of the main where the Coles lived.Lucy A. (daughter of Jarret and Frances Vaughn) married Daniel John JamesPeeler at the family home on February 15, 1871, by Rev. Wilbanks.Witnesses were R.D. and Fannie Cole. Susan Hannah (another daughter)married Edward Lamphier of Marshall, Michigan on January 1, 1872. In 1871the mother of Frances Vaughn died while living on the Cole farm. (Ibelieve this should be that Frances died in 1871 as stated on hertombstone at Brearley Cemetary in Dardanelle) The family then removed toDardanelle where William Vaughn attended about two months of school.Jarret Vaughn later moved to Texas where he died.
In the 1880's William Vaughn (b1856-d1957) married Savannah Farmer
(b1856-d1927). Their sons were Harry & Jesse. The family lived in
Field's Chapel Community until 1908 then removed to Dardanelle.
Harry Vaughn (b1881-1905) and Ollie Pritchard (b1881-d1944) were marriedat the Methodist Church at Field's Chapel after the Church service in1900. Their daughters were all born in that community, the place is nowknown as the Charlie Shepherd farm and has caved into the river. Theirdaughters are Love, Octa, and Virgie. Allen Jasper Vaughn & his sisterNancy Vaughn Thompson & family (uncle & aunt of Lucy Peeler) came to GalaRock township (Dardanelle Bottom) in 1868 one year ahead of Jarret Vaughn& his family. Came on overflow on
Ark. River and they removed to Chickalah.
