The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth. Henci Goer.
Clear, concise, and comprehensive, this book is a must read for anyone planning a hospital birth! With practical advice, based on up-to-date obstetric research, Goer provides readers with the information necessary to make informed choices.
Gentle Birth Choices: A Guide to Making Informed Decisions About Birthing Centers, Birth Attendants, Water Birth, Home Birth, Hospital Birth. Barbara Harper, Suzanne Arms (photographer).
Keep an open mind when reading this book. Some may find it transformational while others may find it quite biased against modern obstetrics. Regardless, it is a resource in itself. Harper gives excellent information about the background and  "medicalization" of childbirth, dispells common medical myths, provides a midwifery model of maternity care, discusses home birth, water birth, and the mind-body connection, and offers an interesting concept called "gentle birth", which "can bring us back to honoring how birth was meant to be" - a positive, healthy, and empowering experience. Pictures capture the joy and intensity of birth but may occasionally be "too graphic" for some readers. This book motivates women to take control of birth and points technology to take its rightful place as a tool for special circumstances... An excellent alternative to mainstream birth books and a must read for educators in the field!
Birthing From Within: An Extra-Ordinary Guide To Childbirth Preparation. Pam England & Rob Horowitz.
Written by a midwife and a psychologist, Birthing From Within (BFW) utilizes and promotes a holistic approach to childbirth preparation. By guiding women to ask insightful questions about themselves through journaling, the use of birth art, etc. BFW teaches women to prepare for birth in their heart and soul, not just in their head, because "giving birth is something a woman does in her body, not in her head"...
Understanding and Teaching Optimal Foetal Positioning. Jean Sutton and Pauline Scott.
This booklet provides excellent information on how to assess the baby's position, maternal positions to avoid during pregnancy and labor, practical ideas to encourage 'Optimal Foetal Positioning' (OFP) before and during labor, and the benefits of OFP. A must read for all those involved in educating and caring for pregnant women, their partners, and support people!
