Birth Plan Resources
"There is no blank birth plan form to fill out that will suit everybody. Not everybody even wants to do one. But writing out a birth plan can help you to clarify your own priorities, reveal areas you want to learn more about and make sure that your feelings and desires are understood and respected - even when labor gets too intense for discussing issues."   ~ Pregnacy and Birth: The Best Evidence
Although it is difficult, if not impossible, to "plan" your baby's birth, preparing a birth plan can allow you and your careprovider(s) to become better aware of your preferences during labor, delivery, and the early postpartum period. (I often suggest using the phrase "birth preferences" or "birth wishes", which is usually what a birth plan entails.)

Many pregnancy and childbirth books provide a sample format of - or give instructions on how to write - a birth plan. You can either use one of these formats or create your own. In the 4th edition of her book,
Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn: The Complete Guide, Penny Simkin describes what she calls a "Win-Win Birth Plan". You can find various formats on the internet as well - click here for a sample.
