| Chapter. 3 A month later during dinner, one of the med-jai soldiers came to Ardeth and told him the disturbing news. My chief, the foreign legion is at Hamunaptra, the city of the dead, said the med-jai soldier trying to catch his breath. Is this true Abdul? asked Ardeth in an angered state. I am afraid it is, responded the soldier Then we must get the 12 tribes and go fight them before they wake the creature, said Ardeth getting up. We leave at dawn, yallah, yallah Mohammed had still not heard of the news. Once again he had done as much as possible, he was writing a letter to Meela. As he was doing so, he saw Ardeth approaching. What is it Ardeth, is something the matter? Yes, Muhammad, some men are approaching Hamunaptra, we must go and stop them. I just came to tell you that we leave at dawn so prepare yourself. Ardeth said these last words bitterly and left before Mohammed had the chance to say anything. This led Mohammed to the conclusion that it was a serious matter. He communicated this to Meela in the letter that he was writing and left rapidly to have it off and to get ready for the battle. The night was cold, colder than usual as the med-jais left for the city of the dead. Soon morning was upon them and they could see the foreigners from afar. Ardeth had told Mohammed to stay close to him once the battle began. Once they got closer to the intruders the shooting began. The battle was soon over. Yet, there was one man who still stood. He ran while firing his pistols. Mohammed caught a view of him and led his horse towards him. As the man saw the med-jai heading towards him with a schemer he got a hold of is last gun and began to shoot towards the young med-jai. It was over too quick, as Mohammed felt himself falling from his horse. Twice the foreign man, who began to run fro the sake of is own life, had shot him. Muhamme lay in the middle of the battleground watching in horror the other med-jais fighting and lying on the ground. The pain was gone now, and all he felt was numbness. He did not see his life flash before his eyes, but his life with Meela. He saw her face, her eyes, and her smile. He could still hear her laugh, her sweet laugh. In agonizing effort he breathed her name and with that left Meela forever |
