Keyloggers are small software programs which monitors all the activity on remote or local computers..fully hidden from the computer user and logs everything that is typed in a protected file . keyloggers record all keystrokes.
It works in the absolutely stealth mode. Stealth mode means that no button or icon is present in the Task Bar, and no process title is visible in the Task Manager list..invisible for the firewall programs also ..
Many keylogger programms also read Captures the passwords behind the asterisks..and sends Sends log by e-mail (in the stealth mode) . or uploads to FTP folders to specified location .
Some keyloggers also can carry out visual surveillance (screenshots).It periodically makes screenshots in invisible mode and stores the compressed images on the disk..
Actually these keylogger programs are used to monitor children or spouse , or co-worker online activities .. but some times Hacker take advantage of sending keylogger to some one and he can know what that victim has typed .. and he can get credit card numbers , or passwords
Some keylogger programs allows to configure and send to remote user also .this method is called remote installation .
Keyloggers allows to attach keylogger to any other program and send it by e-mail to install on the remote computer in the stealth mode.
How to protect from keyloggers ?
The best way is not to share any executable files or anyfiles from others ..
allways scan downloaded files with Anti virus software immediately after downloading .
Use best Anti -keylogger softwares , and Anti - spy softwares ..
check the start -up programs .. in msconfig..
How to detect keyloggers ?
Generally it is difficult to detect some keyloggers still we can do it
1. Start button > Startup folder > check what programs are starting when your computer starts each time
2. start button > Run > type " msconfig "
Now you can see System configuration utility window now go to startup TAB
and see what are the programs are Automatically starting each time whenever you start your computer .
remember some keylogger programs can modify their start up name to one of operating system name so try to check where exactly the startup file is starting from
Incase if you find any suspect or malicious program running in start up and then now uncheck the check box and restart your computer
3. Install Anti-spy software like spybot , Microsoft Antispyware or any good Anti spyware software and Update it Run it and check for any keyloggers or any spyware or monitoring programs on your computer .
4. press CTRL + ALT + DEL Now you can see Task manager if you are running windows XP then go to Processes TAB and check what are the proceses running on your computer . but the hard thing is some keylogger programs hide from Taskmanager also .
I suggest you have to fallow all the above steps to detect spyware and besides , you can also go for Online spyware checking ..
when they detect try to remove it by using Anti - spyware softwares
but I always suggest to back up your registry when you install your operating system freshly .
these are only few steps to protect your computer from spyware programs still many techniques are updated from time to time .
Hardware keyloggers
Hardware keyloggers are some sort of Hardware device installed on your computer cabinet , this sort of Hardware will not be detected by most of Operating systems . it looks quite and no body knows unless untill they open and see for the particular hardware device in the cabitnet . this Hardware device will log all the keystrokes typed on the computer and store in them . so when it romoved and connected back to computer it shows all the keys typed .. so the best way to protect from such a type of Hardware keyloggers , is better not to allow anyone else to operate or open your computer cabinet .
some Hardware keyloggers looks like an adapter which connects from your keyboard to PS/2 ..
I have searched web and I didn't found any correct information about keyloggers . yes there are lot of sites on keyloggers but very less sites on how we can protect our computers from kyeloggers . so thats why here I wrote the above
