February 16-20, 2003

Today the swelling of my peri-rectal abscess was alot worse. And I thought yesterday it wouldn't get any worse. I was trying to wait until Monday to go see a doctor about it, but there was just no way I could wait any longer to go and see a doctor about this now. I could barely walk at all. Finally, it got so bad, I asked my mom to take me to the ER in Pittsburgh, 60 miles south from where we live. That is where all my doctors and surgeons are. It was the best place to go. At the ER they sent down a lot of my different doctors to look at the abscess. I was started right away on 2 different anti-biotics in the ER. They told us that I would be getting admitted, too.
The clock flips over from 11:59pm to midnight, and we are still down in the ER. Shortly later my surgeon comes to see me, and he has a look at the abscess. He asked if I wanted to get it taken care of right there in the ER. I said heck no. Then he said there was no way he would be able to examine me with it being so painful to even touch. Plus he said he would take me to the OR to take care of it. I had about 4 other doctors come in to see me at the ER, and do lovely rectal examinations on me. I hate it. It was so painful.
Well, today they had no extra time to take me to the OR, so they just kept me on the anti-biotics all day long. They did start to help the abscess. The size of it got smller, plus it was draining alot on its own. So today I just basically tried to lay still in bed. Any kind of moving around made the abscess hurt worse. Today was boring (as always when you are in the hospital)

Finally today they got to take me down to the OR around 2pm. But, it had been already so long since I had been started on the antibiotics that the abscess literally drained itself. Then, something else happened. There was a small bicker about how they were going to examine the abscess. Either on my belly (prone) or on my back. They ended up doing the abscess with me in the prone position. Later on this woul turn out to be a very very bd idea. In the Operating Room they irrigated the abscess out, plus they found a deep ulceration up in under one of my skin tags from hving Crohn's Disese. After words, my surgeon went and talked to my mom and let her know what they did about the abscess. With the operation over and done with, I didn't have alot of pain back there. I didn't have pain as long as I kept the pressure from around where the peri-rectal to a minimum. This was hard to do while laying in bed because I had to always be laying on one side or the other. I couldn't sit directly on my butt or my back. Pain was minimal at first. It didn't hurt too bad, but when I was waking up from the operation I could feel the thudding back there. They also had given me some big shots of numbing mediction all around the peri-rectal abscess.
Today I got to go home! Yay. freedom at last. First of all, I don't like being in the hospital because they always make it so that I'm not allowed to have anything to eat, until they decide what they are going to do with me. Sometimes it takes them days to decide because they have to do tests or what ever. Being on a clear liquid diet really sucks too. When they do decide to let me eat, that's what I get...clear liquids. At least twizzlers count as a clear liquid :). Today I was eating good when I was discharged.
