Mean Doctors....
"It's okay to be put asleep only 6 hours after you ate solid food..."
This story, I can't believe myself. It was Wednesday afternoon, about 11:30am. The following day I was suppose to have the stent taken out of my pancreas. It was already planned and scheduled for thursday. I'm sitting in my bed, waiting for lunch....When my one GI doctor comes walking in...he asks me a few typical questions...how do you feel? etc etc. Then, to my suprise..he says "we are taking you down stairs today, to take out the stent." I said.."Why? Its already planned for tomorrow. And I already ate breakfast anyway. You can't put me asleep after I ate food only a few hours ago!!". Then he says..."Well, we will wait a little bit longer then, around 2pm we will do it." I say..."I thought people are suppose to be NPO the night before any procedure where you are put asleep, so they don't vomit up the food in their stomach's?" And he replies. "no no no...it will be fine..." and then he leaves my room, leaving me totally baffled.
2pm rolls around...and escort shows up at my room...to take me downstairs. The whole time I was having a bad feeling about this. Anyway...I get to the lab...and the anesthesiologist comes out to introduce himself and everything. Then he goes through his list of questions, one of them being, have you ate today? I said yes, around 9am. Then he asked me if my doctor knew this, and I told him yes. He then says "wait a minute"..and he goes to talk with the head doctor on call in the GI lab. We heard the head person(a woman) and my GI docto arguing over me. And we heard her say.."We only do this if its an EMERGENCY. Other than that, they have to be NPO from midnight the night before." So then, I get sent back up to my room, after I'm treated like it was MY fault I ate food. Well, lets see, my op is scheduled for thursday morning...they switch it to wednesday afteroon....without telling ME until 11:30AM. That is AFTER I get my breakfast tray...and eat some food. I had no idea they were moving my test up. I didn't know nothing, until 11:30am. It wasn't my fault. It was my doctors. When he found out I had alreaady ate, at 9am, he should of stopped right then, and not sent me to the lab at 2pm.
Because of his mistake, I didn't get lunch. And I didn't get dinner either because they forgot to put my name back on the tray food list with the cafeteria. How sweet. I had to go down to the cafeteria myself, and get myself my own food for dinner. Not to mention the hour I spent downstairs in the GI lab. I didn't get back to my room till almost 3:45. Idiot doctors.
