Potty Training Samantha
Although Tina and our teenage daughters were definitely more adept, I was bound and determined to take my turn at helping potty-train Samantha.
I followed Tina's instructions to the letter...taking Sam by the hand, leading her into the bathroom, and setting her on her little potty. In fact, whenever I was in the bathroom, Sam would toddle in, just to be near me. I never failed to take the opportunity to set her on her little potty and talk to her about using it to poo poo and pee pee.
Samantha has always been a daddy's girl. For this reason, she delights in trying to do everything like daddy. Most of the time, this is a positive attribute. But there are times when wanting to be like daddy can be a little confusing.
I can remember getting her a little plastic truck, and telling her it was just like daddy's. She was absolutely thrilled. I have gray hair, but jokingly told Tina that it was actually more of a blonde color. From that day forward, Samantha told everyone that my hair is blonde. When it came time for her to get a new book bag for school, she wanted a gray one. Sam grabbed a gray one from the rack and said, "Blonde, like Daddy!"
But Samantha's desire to be like daddy got us both in trouble when it came to getting her "potty-trained". One afternoon, I came home from work and found the ladies of the house in an uproar. It seems, the previous night, one of our older daughters had taken Sam into the bathroom to give her bath. She started running water in the tub, and undressed Samantha. She turned around to check on the water filling the tub. When she looked back at Samantha, she could not believe her eyes. Sam was standing at the commode, peeing on the floor, while scratching her little belly. When our daughter asked Sam what in the world she was doing, Sam said, "Pee like Daddy!"
Needless to say, until Samantha was completely potty-trained, I was taken out of the loop. Many times, I look into the loving eyes of my little darling, and think about the fact that she is so taken with the idea of being like me. What many people do not realize is that, in all reality, I want to be more like her.
